The survival of Louis XVII from the horrible Temple prison after the murder of his father Louis XVI and his mother Marie Antoinette is a fascinating story left out of all official French history. No wonder they did not want to hand him over to the Spanish king or the Vendee province, both of which demanded his release. I exist because he survived! If he did not survive who am I then? No one can give an answer to that, because no other answer exists. The book tells his life story and it intertwines with mine. I also left the country of my birth after the Second World War to try my luck elsewhere. I left my parents behind as a young man of 18. I did not suffer as he did but there are many parallels. And in the end our stories come together as I try to find a final answer to the quest of getting my name accepted in my country France. What if, at the dawn of the American nation, Army officers plotted successfully to overthrow Congress and enthrone George Washington as King of the United States? Time has passed, and the year is 1925. Ravaged by more than a century of revolutions, the Union is falling apart. American King Augustine grovels at the feet of the British Empire, begging aid for his bankrupt kingdom. His war against the Republic of Louisiana is a resounding disaster. Repeatedly smashed by the enemy, the starved U.S. Army is fleeing the battlefield. An evil cult on the loose in the nation's capital of Philadelphia has thrown the city into a hysterical frenzy. Unfortunately for the royals, the cult's main gateway to Hell is hidden somewhere in the palace. The kingdom is desperate for a warrior saint to deliver it from evil. Americans look to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Johnny Washington-Bourbon as the perfect savior. He flies combat missions and heals with his touch. The people adore him. Sworn enemies put aside their differences to join his crusade. There's just one problem--twelve-year-old Johnny has far more courage than common sense, and his harebrained schemes to save America are disasters waiting to happen.

Fighting to reclaim the French crown for the Bourbons, the duchesse de Berry faces betrayal at the hands of one of her closest advisors in this dramatic history of power and revolution. The year was 1832, a cholera pandemic raged, and the French royal family was in exile, driven out by yet another revolution. From a drafty Scottish castle, the duchesse de Berry -- the mother of the eleven-year-old heir to the throne -- hatched a plot to restore the Bourbon dynasty. For months, she commanded a guerilla army and evaded capture by disguising herself as a man. But soon she was betrayed by her trusted advisor, Simon Deutz, the son of France's Chief Rabbi. The betrayal became a cause célèbre for Bourbon loyalists and ignited a firestorm of hate against France's Jews. By blaming an entire people for the actions of a single man, the duchess's supporters set the terms for the century of antisemitism that followed. Brimming with intrigue and lush detail, The Betrayal of the Duchess is the riveting story of a high-spirited woman, the charming but volatile young man who double-crossed her, and the birth of one of the modern world's most deadly forms of hatred. !--EndFragment--

Born into the high aristocracy, where rank meant more than wealth, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord was to become one of the great politicians of all time. His early career in politics was marked with turmoil: a liberal who saw the need to curb the powers of the monarchy, Talleyrand fled from France when the violence of the revolution turned extreme in 1792, first to England and then to the United States. It was not until his return to France after the dust had settled in 1796 that his star would begin to rise in earnest. First, he was appointed Foreign Minister. In this position, he aligned himself with the charismatic general who would become Emperor of France: Napoleon Bonaparte. In the course of the next three decades, Talleyrand would prove himself perhaps the most adept politician of all time: his political pliability allowed him to survive the fall of Bonaparte and the consequent second Bourbon restoration. He was in the shadow of power in Europe through more upheaval than perhaps any other person of his generation. Napoleon’s Master is a riveting portrait of an eternally fascinating man.
