In 1932 and 1933, during the months surrounding the Nazi seizure of power, Daniel Guérin, then a young French journalist, made two trips through Germany. The Brown Plague, translated here into English for the first time, is Guérin's eyewitness account of the fall of the Weimar Republic and the first months of the Third Reich. Originally written for the popular French left press and then revised by the author into book form, The Brown Plague delivers a passionate warning to French workers about the terror and horror of fascism. Guérin chronicles the collapse of the German workers' movement and reports on the beginnings of clandestine resistance to the Nazis. He also describes the Socialist and Communist leaderships' inability to recognize the danger that led to their demise. Through vivid dialogs, interviews, and revealing descriptions of everyday life among the German people, he offers insight into the tragedy that was beginning to unfold. Guérin's travels took him across the countryside and into the cities of Germany. He describes with extraordinary clarity, for example, his encounters with large groups of unemployed workers in Berlin and the spectacle of Goering presiding over the Reichstag. Staying in youth hostels, Guérin met individuals representing a range of various groups and movements, including the Wandervögel, leftist brigades, Hitler Youth, and the strange, semicriminal sexual underground of the Wild-frei. Devoting particular attention to the cultural politics of fascism and the lure of Nazism for Germany's disaffected youth, he describes the seductive rituals by which the Nazis were able to win over much of the population. As Robert Schwartzwald makes clear in his introduction, Guérin's interest in Germany at this time was driven, in part, by a homoerotic component that could not be stated explicitly in his published material. This excellent companion essay also places The Brown Plague within a broad historical and literary context while drawing connections between fascism, aesthetics, and sexuality. Informed by an epic view of class struggle and an admiration for German culture, The Brown Plague, a notable primary source in the literature of modern Europe, provides a unique view onto the rise of Nazism.

This Element provides a comprehensive explanation of Wittgenstein's philosophy. It introduces distinctions that are essential for approaching the multilayered complex of Wittgenstein's oeuvre. One is the distinction between writing philosophical clarifications for himself and forming philosophical books for his reader.

Apart from the Tractatus, Wittgenstein did not write whole manuscripts, but composed short fragments. The current volume reveals the depths of Wittgenstein's soul-searching writings - his "new" philosophy - by concentrating on ordinary language and using few technical terms. In so doing, Wittgenstein is finally given the accolade of a neglected figure in the history of semiotics. The volume applies Wittgenstein's methodological tools to the study of multilingual dialogue in philosophy, linguistics, theology, anthropology and literature. Translation shows how the translator's signatures are in conflict with personal or stylistic choices in linguistic form, but also in cultural content. This volume undertakes the "impossible task" of uncovering the reasoning of Wittgenstein's translated texts in order to construct, rather than paraphrase, the ideal of a terminological coherence.

Ambition is something most people have buried deep inside them. The problem is, most people are programmed to fail. Charlene, driven by a passion for supremacy, is unlike most people in that she will do whatever is necessary to make her desires real. What Charlene does not realise is that running deep within her bloodline is a connection to a game-changing predestined event. She will have to delve into black magic in order to rise to the position she so desperately craves. Touch Not the Horse is a supernatural thriller by Anthony Gavali. The setting is the city of Londons financial heart and a horse sanctuary in East Sussex. In this complexly woven modern-day tale of success at all costs, readers are transported back through a dark history, where the fight for control of the worlds resources has been burning for centuries. Two bloodlines seek to hold the balance of power, with only one outcome. These bloodlines have travelled down through the gauntlet of time to manifest in the twenty-first century with one aim: to fight the ultimate battle of control. Charlene holds the torch ready for the darkness. It will take the power of one man and one horse to stand in her way. They are armed with only the belief that humanity must be freed from the hands of evil. It once again falls to the few to save humanity from the bonds of eternal slavery. The question, however, is this: Will this belief be strong enough to withstand the cyclone that is about to hit them? Follow the story of Dean and his horse, Girlie, as they find themselves caught in this unavoidable dilemma against Charlene and the Devils servant, the evil Spirit which dwells inside her. Set around the Sussex Horse Rescue Trust in Uckfield, Tatsfield and other locations.
