The Circulatory System, Third Edition

Book Description

Composed of the heart, blood vessels, and blood, the circulatory system delivers oxygen and nutrients to every tissue in the body. At the center of this incredibly complex system is the heart, a strong muscle that continuously pumps blood throughout the body. Striving to promote a basic understanding of the fundamental physical and biological principles underlying circulatory functions, The Circulatory System, Third Edition describes the anatomical features of the system and examines how it responds to a broad range of challenges, such as increased activity, the microgravity of space, and hemorrhage. Packed with full-color photographs and illustrations, this absorbing book provides students with sufficient background information through references, websites, and a bibliography.

Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation, Second Edition

Book Description

This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

The Circulatory System

Book Description

Discusses the circulatory system and ways to keep your heart healthy, and shows a map of blood's route around the body.

Your Circulatory System

Book Description

Presents information about the circulatory system, looking at the heart, blood, and blood vessels that compose it, as well as how they work together to keep the body healthy.

MRI and CT of the Cardiovascular System

Book Description

Written by internationally eminent experts in cardiovascular imaging, this volume provides state-of-the-art information on the use of MRI and CT in the assessment of cardiac and vascular diseases. This third edition, now in four-color, reflects recent significant advances in cardiovascular MRI technology and the continuing emergence of multi-detector CT as an important diagnostic modality, particularly for ischemic heart disease. Seven new chapters have been added including chapters on anatomy, cardiovascular MR in infants/children, assessing myocardial viability, risk assessment in ischemic heart disease and MR guidance.

The Circulatory System

Book Description

This graphic nonfiction book introduces the circulatory system of the human body. The Building Blocks of Life Science volumes feature whimsical characters to guide young readers through topics exploring the human body systems. Full-page or full-spread diagrams detail the different parts of each body system. The science is as sound as the presentation is fun! The volumes include a glossary, an additional resource list, and an index. Several spreads in each volume are illustrated with photographs to help clarify concepts and facts.

How the Circulatory System Works

Book Description

This book includes 10 lectures in a light, entertaining style, witheach "lecture" building on the previous one - making it easy forthe reader to comprehend the vastly complicated functions of thecirculatory system. The length of the text has intentionally been kept short; it isneither exhaustively complete nor over-simplified. It is enrichedby details about basic biologic mechanisms and clever ways naturehas solved a problem or achieved a result.

The Circulatory System

Book Description

Describes the various parts of the human circulatory system and explains how and why blood is circulated throughout the body.
