Political Economy and Ethics (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Political Economy and Ethics Though I have received no direct assistance in the preparation of this little Essay, I avail myself of this opportunity to acknowledge my indebtedness to my teachers. My deepest obligation is to my first teacher in Philosophy, Ethics, and Psychology, the late Professor George Paxton Young, LL.D. For his careful training in methods and his skilful guidance in philosophical problems, and for the privilege of coming into close contact with a teacher of such noble character, pure life, and lofty ideals, I feel profoundly grateful. Economics and Ethics

Book Description

Excerpt from Economics and Ethics: A Treatise on Wealth and Life The argument of this book is addressed to those who desire to order their daily lives, in the home, in the shop, in the factory, or on the farm, in conformity with the highest ethical standards, or, in more familiar words, to live according to the will of God; and to them only. They constitute, I hope, a large portion of mankind, but be that as it may, I know that there are at present among them many who are sorely perplexed in mind, and gravely disturbed in conscience, by the apparent contradiction between the precepts of Ethics and the laws of Economics. It is my earnest hope that in this book they may find some help towards the solution of their difficulties. Others, not thus troubled, will, I hope, find here an exposition, as simple as I can make it, of the leading principles of Economic Theory, as understood and ex pounded by the Classical Economists. But the book is distinguished from any other text-book known to me by the abundance of concrete illustrations, and by occasional excursions into the domain of Economic history. I have throughout attempted to utilize such knowledge as I possess of affairs, particularly of finance and industry, alike for the purpose of supporting the conclusions of Economic Theory by reference to the actual facts of business, and also in the hope of disarming the suspicion still entertained by 'practical' men of the merely theoretical Economist.
