Online applications have been gaining wide acceptance among the general public. Companies like Amazon, Google, Yahoo! and NetFlicks have been doing extremely well over the last few years largely because of people becoming more comfortable and trusting of the Internet. The increasing acceptance of online products makes it increasingly important to address some of the scientific techniques involved in developing efficient 3D online systems. The topics discussed in this book broadly cover four categories: networking issues in online multimedia; joint texture-mesh simplification and view independent transmission; view dependent transmission and server-side rendering; content and background creation; and creating simple online games.

With the increasing popularization of the Internet, together with the rapid development of 3D scanning technologies and modeling tools, 3D model databases have become more and more common in fields such as biology, chemistry, archaeology and geography. People can distribute their own 3D works over the Internet, search and download 3D model data, and also carry out electronic trade over the Internet. However, some serious issues are related to this as follows: (1) How to efficiently transmit and store huge 3D model data with limited bandwidth and storage capacity; (2) How to prevent 3D works from being pirated and tampered with; (3) How to search for the desired 3D models in huge multimedia databases. This book is devoted to partially solving the above issues. Compression is useful because it helps reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space and transmission bandwidth. On the downside, compressed data must be decompressed to be used, and this extra processing may be detrimental to some applications. 3D polygonal mesh (with geometry, color, normal vector and texture coordinate information), as a common surface representation, is now heavily used in various multimedia applications such as computer games, animations and simulation applications. To maintain a convincing level of realism, many applications require highly detailed mesh models. However, such complex models demand broad network bandwidth and much storage capacity to transmit and store. To address these problems, 3D mesh compression is essential for reducing the size of 3D model representation.

"The flush of adrenaline now running through my veins has long been absent from my life. Though confrontation is not what I anticipated on Topos Hydatos Katharos—place of pure water—the rush of adrenaline reconnects me with the excitement of living. Just as vigorously as I came to Topos Hydatos Katharos to run away from my life, I am now just a vigorously running for my life. Fear and exuberance simultaneously battle for the supremacy of my immediate emotions." Having lost at love and business, Charles sets out for a holiday on the island Topos Hydatos Katharos, renown for relaxation and regeneration. What he finds there is not what he came looking for. An aggressive race of human-like indigenous beings, seeking to dominate the island, has pitted themselves against two other groups who want only peace for the island. Caught in the middle of the conflict Charles begins to learn that, "We are not strong because of what we can do. We are strong because of what we choose not to do, even though we have the power to do it."

The creature under the sink says you’re not human, and only a trip into time itself will show you the truth. After a lackluster birthday party, Phoenix finds a strange creature hiding under her sink. Doing what any sensible person would do. She pokes it. And when that little guy wakes up, he rocks her world. Phoenix isn’t human. The little guy under her sink just told her so. She’s actually a Traveller; a beautiful humanoid who moved through time on multi-coloured wings that filled the sky. So why is she here, sitting on the floor of her tiny apartment with a strange creature named Sid? Why doesn’t she remember any of this? And where are her wings? Following Sid into time itself, Phoenix embarks on a wild adventure. If the Sirens don’t kill her, meeting a talking Yeti might. And ancient Egypt is amazing when it isn’t so ancient. Although she could do without all the snake-men chasing her. And through all this, the most terrifying man in her home world, a silver-skinned warrior named The Archer, is hunting her down. Don’t worry, when the stuff really hits the fan, Phoenix isn’t afraid to swing her baseball bat at whatever is in her way. They say you can’t get blood from a stone, but maybe you can get wings? Either way, Phoenix sure as hell is going to try. Can a city girl travel to ancient lands, do battle with fantastical creatures, and literally find her wings? Pick up Torn from Stone today and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime.
