Walking the Crooked Mile was written for anyone suffering from the trauma of childhood abuse. All survivors have their "crooked" places. These are the distortions and faulty beliefs that are the legacy of an abusive childhood. No matter how skilled you may become at hiding from the pain and fear it remains within you. Unrecognized perhaps but still carried forward into every aspect of your life. Unacknowledged your pain masquerades as something else, bad relationships, poor self-esteem, eating disorders, addictions, chronic illness, pervasive anger... the list goes on. Walking the Crooked Mile systematically dismantles the damaging misconceptions abuse victims struggle to live with everyday. The book is divided into two parts. Part I provides information to build a solid foundation for healing. A series of exercises personalizes this information so it has specific meaning for you and your situation. Part II is designed to assist you in reclaiming yourself. It takes you step by step through the process of developing and then effectively using your personal power. As a victim of abuse you have been devalued, your basic rights trampled and your heart broken. As a child you had no choice or control over what was happening to you but you are no longer a powerless child. Your life and what you choose to do with it is up to you now. You can continue to settle for the crumbs off the table or you can pull up a chair and order a ten course meal.

Catherine Cookson fans will love this heart-warming saga set in Lancashire from The Sunday Times bestseller Ruth Hamilton. You won't want to put it down... "Very much the successor to Catherine Cookson. Her books are plot driven, they just rip along; laughs, weeps, love, they've got the lot, and they're quality writing as well" - Sarah Broadhurst on Radio Four. "Gritty, down-to-earth writing and strong female characters have become the trademarks of her writing" -- Bookworld "I really do not know what to say about this book, it is the most moving story I have ever read. In places it made me laugh, and in many places it made me cry. Absolutely excellent." -- ***** Reader review. "Another excellent book from Ruth Hamilton. I read every night in bed and am always reluctant to switch off my Kindle as I want to know what happens next in the story." -- ***** Reader review. "Ruth Hamilton has exceeded all expectations [-] another successful novel..." -- ***** Reader review. "Really enjoying this book. Can't wait to pick it up again." -- ***** Reader review. ************************** SHE'LL NEED ALL HER STRENGTH TO SURVIVE... Life is tough and conditions are squalid for the residents of Myrtle Street, in the shadow of the Althorpe mills. Joe Duffy, a Bolton tradesman, strives to lift his family out of the 'garden' streets. But as more children are born, Joe's wife Tess sinks deeper into the obsession that will be her undoing. Few people heed her ravings saying that the area is cursed. She is ignored, even as the Myrtle Street tragedies become more frequent and begin to feature in local gossip. It is left to Megan, the third Duffy child to end the curse. When she becomes embroiled in a web of deceit, Megan needs all her strength, talents, and wit in order to survive and ensure her family's stability and the future of the Althorpe cotton mills.

A darkly funny, moving and original novel about a man coming to terms with the corruption around him and the conscience within. Harry Fielding is a shabby, solitary, but basically cheerful sort, living in a seamy flat in London and subsisting on a diet of gin and pre-packed airline meals in unmarked silver containers. He also works for MI5. Surveillance, protection, the occasional rough-and-tumble - just enough to keep body and soul together. However, when Harry witnesses Lisa, his next-door neighbour, killing and burying her sister's violent husband, he begins to lose his appetite...

From her stage debut in 1922 to her final professional appearance in 1996, Elisabeth Welch was an important figure in the world of popular song. In 1923 she launched the Charleston and throughout the Jazz Age, she was associated with some of the great names of the Harlem Renaissance, including Josephine Baker, Adelaide Hall, Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson, and Ethel Waters. On Broadway she popularized Cole Porter's scandalous song "Love for Sale." After settling in London in 1933, she introduced the classic torch song "Stormy Weather" to British audiences, and that same year she began a career in English musical theatre (Cole Porter's Nymph Errant) that lasted sixty years. In 1930s Britain, Ivor Novello wrote songs for her, Paul Robeson was her leading man in films, and she enjoyed popularity as a cabaret star of London's cafe society. Remaining in her adopted country for the duration of the war (1939-45), Elisabeth entertained the troops and the British public, alongside such theatrical giants as Sir John Gielgud. In the post-war years she reigned supreme in sophisticated revues in London's West End. In 1979 Elisabeth's appearance in Derek Jarman's film version of William Shakespeare's The Tempest (in which she sang "Stormy Weather") won her a whole new legion of fans. At the age of 81, she returned to the Broadway stage and her performance in Jerome Kern Goes to Hollywood earned her a Tony nomination. In Elisabeth Welch: Soft Lights and Sweet Music, author Stephen Bourne celebrates the stage, screen, and radio career of this sophisticated African American actress and singer, who always defied categorization. Spanning almost a century of popular music, she did not fit the definition of jazz, torch, pop or ballad singer but defined her art quite simply as "telling a story in song." Whatever she sang, she demonstrated that she had no peer in the art of interpreting songs by the likes of Cole Porter, No l Coward, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. Includes more than 25 photos.
