The Cupola, 1941

Book Description

Excerpt from The Cupola, 1941: June, 1940 Cupola, like any other book, has a plot, characters, setting and purpose. Its plot is a complicated one, involving as it does the lives of several hundred people, the characters being the students (of whom sixty-eight are predomin ant characters, members of the Senior class), teachers, administrative officers, and members of the staff. Its setting is Rockford College in the year 1939-40. The chapters in Cupola are called Who, Where, When, How, and Why. Its purpose is to show the composition of a college, how it functions, and toward what goal it works. We on the staff believe that the aim of a college should not be merely to produce scholars through the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, but to help' in the development of complete persons, women who not only have knowledge but who also know how to use it to the best advantage both for themselves and for the people who make up the world in which they are to live. We believe that to be the aim of Rockford College and we shall try to show in this book how this purpose is carried out. Architecture Beyond the Cupola

Book Description

This book reviews Dante Bini’s inventions and designs, focusing on his form-resistant Binishell and other pneumatic construction systems. Dante Bini’s double profile of architect and builder underpins the narrative of the entire book. It is used to analyse the evolution of the early reinforced-concrete Binishell patent into a variety of automated construction systems based on the use of air. Dante Bini has always been quite proactive in promoting his work and disseminating the results of his experimentations and achievements via journal articles, conference presentations and public talks; promotional brochures in multiple languages were also prepared to export and license his patents in various countries, from Italy to the Americas and Australia. Despite this, a rigorous study of Dante Bini’s work is still unavailable, and the relevance of this figure to contemporary architecture has yet to be discussed comprehensively. This book fills in this gap and arrives at the right time: during the last two decades, there has been an exponential interest in shell and spatial structures, particularly concerning the use of complex geometries and innovative construction techniques. This book will be of interest to academics in architectural design, theory and construction history, and practitioners and students interested in expanding their knowledge in the design and construction of shell and spatial structures.

M3 & M5 Stuart Light Tank 1940–45

Book Description

The M3 and M5 family of light tanks were the culmination of American tank development of the 1930s. By the time of the outbreak of the World War II, they were approaching obsolescence, as tank forces in Europe were shifting from light to medium tanks as the main element of their armored forces. First entering combat in the autumn of 1941 in the Western Desert with the British Army, the Stuart quickly proved its inadequacies. The M3 and M5 light tanks proved more suitable in the Pacific theater than in Europe, and fought successfully in many of the major battles including Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Peleliu. This title narrates this distinctive and unusual fighting vehicle's history.
