The Cupola, 1941

Book Description

Excerpt from The Cupola, 1941: June, 1940 Cupola, like any other book, has a plot, characters, setting and purpose. Its plot is a complicated one, involving as it does the lives of several hundred people, the characters being the students (of whom sixty-eight are predomin ant characters, members of the Senior class), teachers, administrative officers, and members of the staff. Its setting is Rockford College in the year 1939-40. The chapters in Cupola are called Who, Where, When, How, and Why. Its purpose is to show the composition of a college, how it functions, and toward what goal it works. We on the staff believe that the aim of a college should not be merely to produce scholars through the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, but to help' in the development of complete persons, women who not only have knowledge but who also know how to use it to the best advantage both for themselves and for the people who make up the world in which they are to live. We believe that to be the aim of Rockford College and we shall try to show in this book how this purpose is carried out.
