The Decalogue

Book Description

Excerpt from The Decalogue: A Series of Discourses on the Ten Commandments That portion of Scripture on which we are about to enter is universally known, and is more frequently repeated than any other except our Lord's Prayer. And yet it has been rarely selected as a topic for distinct discussion. So much of what has been written on it, labours under the disadvantage of a diction, which is somewhat obsolete. So much more is found in forms and combinations which render the remarks so far inaccessible to the general reader. Then, the recent publications on the Decalogue, professing a more popular tendency, are few; and hitherto, at least so far as ascertained, these seem to have migrated in small numbers to this part of the country. The Commandments, indeed, are excellently defined in sundry Catechisms, and learnedly explained in many Commentaries; but these, though invaluable, do not satisfy the larger wish of the soul. In such circumstances, the Author has been induced to issue the present Volume - to reproduce through the press what, with many emendations, was first delivered from the pulpit. The aspect of morality, as now seen in politics, in commerce, and in common life, has farther prompted him to undertake the commanded duty of "crying aloud, and not sparing, while showing the people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins."
