Excerpt from The Detection and Measurement of Inflammable Gas and Vapour in the Air: With a Chapter on the Detection and Measurement of Petroleum Vapour This little book is intended to sum up briefly the results of investigations which have involved much thought and experimental work on my part for several years. Some of the matter has never yet been published; the rest has been scattered over the Proceedings of several of the scientific societies of this and other countries. The attempt is now made to bring the information together in connected form, and to render it more generally available and useful. The form in which the work is cast enables the reader to gather a general and continuous account of the subject-matter by reading through the Chapters consecutively. If he requires more detailed information, he can obtain this by referring to the Appendices following the Chapters. In these Appendices the original papers are printed in full, and newer matter is frequently added. The very full illustration of the text by diagrams will, it is hoped, add much to its intelligibility. The detection and accurate measurement of small quantities of firedamp in the air of the coal-mine was the problem originally attacked.
