The Devonshire Mysteries Books I-III

Book Description

The first three novels in the popular British murder mystery series, The Devonshire Mysteries (plus a bonus mystery story). Join amateur detectives Dan and Alan as they investigate mysterious murders against the idyllic rural backdrop of Dartmoor and Cornwall. These British mysteries will keep you turning the pages but they won't give you nightmares. The Devonshire Mysteries are cosy mysteries (or cozy mysteries for my friends across the pond). As with any cosy/cozy mystery, you'll find a crime (or two just to make things interesting) and there'll be clues, suspects, red herrings and a variety of puzzles for our intrepid investigators to solve. While there is an element of danger, and let's face it, crime is never pleasant, you won't find gratuitous violence or gore. Any profanity is infrequent, mild and presented in the context of the story. Sound good? Then escape to rural Devon, where the sun is shining on the rolling green fields, the birds are singing in the trees, and the wilds of Dartmoor are just a heartbeat away. The Devonshire Mysteries - your world of cosy mystery awaits. Enjoy all three mystery novels in one handy collection, plus a bonus mystery story, and remember, there's more to Dartmoor than meets the eye. A Beautiful Blue Death

Book Description

Equal parts Sherlock Holmes and P.G. Wodehouse, Charles Finch's debut mystery A Beautiful Blue Death introduces a wonderfully appealing gentleman detective in Victorian London who investigates crime as a diversion from his life of leisure. Charles Lenox, Victorian gentleman and armchair explorer, likes nothing more than to relax in his private study with a cup of tea, a roaring fire and a good book. But when his lifelong friend Lady Jane asks for his help, Lenox cannot resist the chance to unravel a mystery. Prudence Smith, one of Jane's former servants, is dead of an apparent suicide. But Lenox suspects something far more sinister: murder, by a rare and deadly poison. The grand house where the girl worked is full of suspects, and though Prue had dabbled with the hearts of more than a few men, Lenox is baffled by the motive for the girl's death. When another body turns up during the London season's most fashionable ball, Lenox must untangle a web of loyalties and animosities. Was it jealousy that killed Prudence Smith? Or was it something else entirely? And can Lenox find the answer before the killer strikes again—this time, disturbingly close to home?

Dial G for Gravity

Book Description

Brent Bolster has a particular set of skills. Unfortunately, most of them have no practical application whatsoever. Now, he's met his worst nightmare: an alien with a clipboard. So begins the adventures of Brent Bolster and his ragtag coalition of associates. With a client in the shapely form of a gorgeous dame, a musclebound assistant, an alien with an attitude, and fish called Algernon, Brent uncovers a galactic conspiracy. Meanwhile, a mighty warship is on its way. Affectionately known as The Skull by its crew of warlike Andelians, the ship causes all who see her to tremble. And in command is the notorious Admiral Norph, a warrior who makes Genghis Khan look neighborly. The scene is set for a galactic confrontation. Can Brent handle it? Probably not. But it will be fun to watch him try. You’ll get a kick out of this comedy because all sci-fi fans love a tongue-in-cheek reference. Dial G for Gravity takes the world of an old-fashioned gumshoe and propels it into the future. But like all good sci-fi, it has something to say about the way we live now and where we’re headed. So grab a pot of joe, fill your favorite Star Fleet mug, and start reading. Praise for Dial G for Gravity All from GoodReads reviewers. I stayed up far later than intended to read more of it. Brent is fun, an idiot, but fun. The humour is reminiscent of Douglas Adams novels and Red Dwarf. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it even more tongue in cheek then M.I.B. It's funny, intriguing, there's hints of romance, plotting and tremors of intergalactic war. What more could you ask from your story? This is a great book to read. The cast of characters are vivid, hilarious at times. And unique to say the least. A mystery in the form of a comedy. I loved it A comic galactic mystery that's a cross between Red Dwarf, MIB and Ghostbusters, Mikey Campling's excellent novel Dial G for Gravity will have you rolling in the aisles, before checking under the bed and in the wardrobes for little green men, before you can relax and go to sleep tonight! This book is such great fun. I especially liked the characters in it. They are so very believable and likeable too. I loved their quirkiness and personality flaws. The story is compelling, the characters are three dimensional, it's complex and definitely un-put-down-able. The humor is much more adult, dryer, with a more classic wit.

FIRE IN THE THATCH

Book Description

One of the very few known facts about the life of Edith Caroline Rivett is that she was evacuated from London to South Devon during the war. Among London and North Lancashire this region provides the setting for several of her novels. As seen in Fire in the Thatch she apparently knows about its landscape and agriculture, its vernacular architecture and its people. Haycraft, Howard in Murder for Pleasure suggests a formula for the detective genre "50% good detection, 25% character, 25% what you know best". Mrs. Rivett, writing as E. C. R Lorac, certainly fulfils the last 25%. The setting in time is excellent, too. It’s about 1944 and references to the war abound. Rationing of petrol is even an integral part of the story.

The Darkeningstone

Book Description
