The Dictionary of Trade Products

Book Description

Excerpt from The Dictionary of Trade Products: Manufacturing and Technical Terms, Moneys, Weights, and Measures of All Countries Chief works of ready reference are a necessity of the present day, and this one I have endeavoured to make as complete as possible. My long career as a journalist and author of sixty years experience has afforded me many facilities for acquiring special knowledge on Commerce and Finance. Few, perhaps, have contributed so largely to technical literature and popular encyclopaedias as I have done, and this, added to an official connection with all the great International Exhibitions which have been held during the last forty years, combined with important official Museum duties, has given me many advantages. That this work has proved useful is evident from the large sale it has had, and its extensive employment in adding new words to the great Dictionaries of America and Europe. The vast expansion of Commerce, and the introduction of new products and trades since the work was first published, have, however, rendered additions necessary. Without interfering with the body of the work, I have thought that an Appendix would bring it up to date, by supplementing the few statistics introduced, correcting the fluctuating exchange value of coins in circulation, such as rupees, dollars, tacls, etc., and adding new electrical, chemical, cycling, and other trade terms, and products not hitherto described. As there is really no good Polyglot Dictionary, and a set of the Dictionaries of Continental and other languages is not always at hand for reference, I have thought it desirable to insert the foreign names of many animals and commercial products which are frequently mentioned in prices-current, newspapers, and books of travel.
