Excerpt from The Edison Monthly: June, 1916 Railroad electrification is of more than passing significance to New Yorkers. To the substitution of electricity for steam this city owes its two great terminal developments. The wonderful Pennsylvania Station and the tubes connecting it with the South and West on one side and with Long Island and - via the Hell Gate Bridge - with New England on the other, would still be unrealized were it not for the application of electricity to railroad operation. In the case of the Grand Central Terminal, the illustration is not quite so sharply drawn. Although here the magnificent marble structure and the two levels of station platforms are hardly compatible with smoke-belch ing engines. With these two illustra tions must be considered the projected W'est Side improvement, wherein Riverside Drive is to be restored. And the lower sections of -the city are to be freed of their present street surface freight tracks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A sweeping history of the electric light revolution and the birth of modern America The late nineteenth century was a period of explosive technological creativity, but more than any other invention, Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb marked the arrival of modernity, transforming its inventor into a mythic figure and avatar of an era. In The Age of Edison, award-winning author and historian Ernest Freeberg weaves a narrative that reaches from Coney Island and Broadway to the tiniest towns of rural America, tracing the progress of electric light through the reactions of everyone who saw it and capturing the wonder Edison’s invention inspired. It is a quintessentially American story of ingenuity, ambition, and possibility in which the greater forces of progress and change are made by one of our most humble and ubiquitous objects.
