Effects of Technology Immersion on Teaching and Learning


Book Description

The Technology Immersion Pilot (TIP) sets forth a vision for technology immersion in Texas public schools that links ubiquitous access to technology with student achievement. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) directed nearly $14 million in federal Title II, Part D monies toward funding a wireless learning environment for high-need middle schools through a competitive grant process. Concurrently, a federally funded research project is scientifically evaluating the effectiveness of technology immersion in increasing middle school students' achievement in core academic subjects as measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Technology immersion encompasses multiple components, including a laptop computer for every middle school student and teacher, wireless access throughout the campus, online curricular and assessment resources, professional development and ongoing pedagogical support for curricular integration of technology resources, and technical support to maintain an immersed campus. This evaluation, with 22 experimental and 22 control sites, is also examining the relationships that exist among contextual conditions, technology immersion, intervening factors (school, teacher, and student), and student achievement. Of particular interest are the effects of technology immersion on teachers' classroom practices and students' learning opportunities. Accordingly, this report centers on classroom observations conducted in sixth-grade classrooms at immersed and control schools during fall 2004 (prior to immersion) and spring 2005 (during early implementation). Appended are: (1) Theoretical Framework for Technology Immersion; (2) Observation of Teaching and Learning; and (3) Framework of Assessment Approaches and Methods. Over the past decade, technology has become a prominent feature in our lives. Technology has not only been integrated into our lives, but into the classroom as well. Teachers have been provided with a tremendous amount of technology related tools to educate their students. However, many of these technologically enhanced tools have little to no research supporting their claims to enhance learning. This study focuses on one aspect of technology, the iBook, to complete homework relating to fractions, decimals, and percents in a sixth grade classroom. An iBook is a digital textbook that allows the user to interact with the book through various features. Some of these features include galleries, videos, review quizzes, and links to websites. These interactive features have the potential to enhance comprehension through interactivity and increased motivation. Prior to this study, two pilot iterations were conducted. During each pilot study, students in two sixth grade classrooms used the iBook to supplement learning of fractions, decimals, and percents. A comparison group was not included during either iteration, as the goal was to fine-tune the study prior to implementation. The current study was the third iteration, which included a comparison and treatment group.




The Effects of Blogging and Podcasting on Student Achievement and Attitude in the Sixth Grade Science Classroom

This action research-based project was conducted to determine the effects of blogging and podcasting on student achievement and attitudes in a sixth grade Earth science classroom. Various blogging and podcasting opportunities were provided. Assessment scores were used to determine their effect on student achievement and attitudes. The research indicated that while blogging and podcasting foster a positive student attitude, they do not increase assessment scores.

English Medium Instruction Programmes

This book is an exploration of the desirability and feasibility of English Medium Instruction (EMI) in specific university settings in South East Asia. There is an increasing trend in many universities in Asia, as elsewhere in the world, to introduce ‘international’ academic programmes taught through the medium of English. Despite the rapidity of this development, there is a dearth of empirical research that investigates the opportunities and challenges across a range of specific contexts. This volume intends to occupy this research space, firstly by reviewing historical and contemporary trends and changes to EMI, and by eliciting the perceptions of a number of applied linguists in a range of Asian universities. These introductory chapters are followed by three case studies exploring the beliefs and practices of EMI lecturers in Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia, and a survey of Malaysian students’ attitudes to key issues relating to medium of instruction. Based on these empirical studies, implications will be drawn with regard to policy, curricula, pedagogical practice, professional development and further research. This book will provide guidance for decision-makers and practitioners for the effective planning and implementation of EMI programmes where English is an additional language for lecturers and students.
