The Effects of the Facts that Last Program on the Computational Fluency of Fourth Graders

The purpose of this study was to see if daily, systematic practice of basic multiplication facts would improve the computational fluency of my fourth graders. I implemented the Facts that Last program over the course of a ten week period in the fall of 2008. Each week of treatment focused on a specific strategy and included daily, direct instruction and time for skills practice. Pre- and posttest data was collect to show growth, in addition to a pre- and post treatment survey to gauge student attitudes in regards to math. Data collected supported my guiding question: Did the use of a systematic supplemental math program, specifically Facts that Last, implemented daily improve the multiplication computational scores of my fourth graders? All participates showed positive growth in their knowledge of basic multiplication facts, with 90% of students meeting the end goal of this study. A majority of students also indicated they felt more confident in their knowledge of math, more specifically basic facts. These finding suggest that strategy-based instruction and guided practice did improve the computational fluency of my students

The Effects of a Taped-problems Intervention on Multiplication Fact Fluency of Fourth Grade Title I Math Students

The purpose of this action research study was to increase multiplication fact fluency for a small class of fourth grade students by implementing an efficient intervention model. The research question was: What are the effects of a Taped-Problems (TP) intervention on multiplication fact fluency of fourth grade Title I math students? This study applied a quantitative, quasiexperimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. To test the effect TP intervention had on student multiplication fact fluency, mean DCM scores on baseline assessment probes were compared to mean DCM scores on maintenance assessment probes with a two-tailed dependent t-test. For two of the three problem sets, the maintenance mean DCM scores increased significantly over the baseline mean DCM scores. Furthermore, analysis of individual student mean DCM scores indicated an increase from either frustration level to instructional level or instructional level to mastery level (Deno & Mirkin, 1977). The data moderately supported the hypothesis that TP intervention affected student multiplication fact fluency. Based on the results of this study, further research would be merited on examining the number of intervention sessions as related to sustained maintenance DCM scores. It would also be advantageous for future research to investigate the effects of efficiency modifications such as training students or developing computer software for independent administration of the TP intervention.

The Effects of Using the Fluency and Automaticity Through Systematic Teaching with Technology Computer Program on Student Ability to Retrieve Math Facts from Memory in a Grade 3 Classroom

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using the Fluency and Automaticity through Systematic Teaching with Technology (FASTT Math) computer program on student ability to retrieve math facts from memory in a grade 3 classroom. This study utilized a quasi-experimental group pretest/posttest design. This treatment took place for a 9 week period. Subjects participated in the FASTT math program for 20 minutes daily. Subjects were given daily instruction on their non-automatized facts, while continuing practice and review on facts being recalled from memory. The CRCSD Single-digit Hand assessment, the Fuchs and Fuchs Addition Facts Timed Test, and the Initial Fast Facts Placement test were given as pretests to establish baseline scores. These assessments were also given as posttests to determine the outcome of the treatment. Results showed an increase in subject fact retrieval, and fact fluency for all subjects in the treatment. The results indicate the FASTT math program had a positive effect on student ability to retrieve math facts from memory.




The Effects of Curricular Modifications on Math Fact Fluency Rates

The current investigation compared the instructional efficiency of an explicit timing intervention between three conditions that varied on the curricular dimension of problem set size. The first goal was to determine if learning rates differ between groups exposed to probe sets containing either a mixture of automatic and non-automatic multiplication problems (Total Condition), non-automatic multiplication problems (Reduced Condition), or a specific ratio of automatic to non-automatic multiplication problems (Ratio Condition). A second goal was to determine if student performance would generalize on 36-problem Reciprocal probe sets. A third goal was to determine which instructional condition facilitates the maintenance of multiplication fact fluency performance the greatest over time. Participants included 73 fourth grade students attending general education at a public school in north central Oklahoma. Student performance was assessed pre-intervention (pre-test), following five weeks of intervention implementation (i.e., posttest), and two weeks following intervention cessation (i.e., maintenance). The total number of digits answered correctly per minute (DCPM) determined fluency performance on each dependent measure (i.e., 100-problem, 36-problem reduced, and 36-problem reciprocal assessments). A doubly repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was utilized and consisted of one within subjects factor (i.e., Pretest, Posttest, and Maintenance) and one between subjects factor (i.e., Total, Reduced, and Ratio Conditions). Collectively, the results indicated that explicit timing was an effective intervention for improving the multiplication fluency performance of students in all treatment conditions. In addition, scores on a two-week follow-up assessment indicated that student fluency performance remained relatively stable over time. The lack of a significant Group x Time interaction suggested the fluency performance of students in each group was similar on multiple assessments over time (i.e., Pretest, Posttest, and Maintenance) on each dependent measure (i.e., 100-problem, 36-problem reduced, and 36-problem reciprocal Assessments). However, the absence of the significant interaction indicated that student fluency performance generalized to the novel presentation of multiplication facts (i.e., reciprocals) for specific conditions.

The Effects of Daily Math Game on Computational Fluency with At-risk Elementary Students


Book Description

The purpose of this study was to see if the implementation of daily math games in an elementary classroom would increase students' computational fluency levels. A pretest of 60 basic multiplication facts was given to students at the start of the project. Once this baseline data was collected, students participated basic multiplication facts. Data collected during the treatment period included weekly student assessments, weekly student surveys, and a teacher maintained journal. At the end of the seven weeks the participants were given a posttest, consisting of the same 60 problems seen on the pretest in a randomized fashion. This allowed for a new measure of computational fluency in the form of correct problems per minute. Findings suggest that the use of math games in the classroom is an effective means of practice to increase computational fluency levels.
