Excerpt from The Equity Decisions: The Hon. John W. Ritchie, Judge in Equity of the Province of Nova Scotia; 1873-1882 This volume is supposed to contain all the decisions delivered by Mr. Justice Ritchie, as Judge in Equity for the Province of Nova Scotia. It may well be that some of his decisions have never come into the hands of the Editor, as there was no regular record kept of the proceedings of the Equity Court, and no set time for the delivery of judgments. A decision has been included in the present volume which does not come strictly within its scope, as it was delivered by His Lordship as a member of the Supreme Court in banco, but the importance of the question discussed, its intimate connection with the subjects treated in a class of cases coming strictly within the scope of this volume, and the fact that the case does not appear in print elsewhere, seemed to warrant its being included in the present collection. The hope is indulged that the volume now presented may do something to perpetuate the fame of a tribunal to which, in His Lordship's time, the words of the late Chancellor Kent were pre-eminently suitable, a tribunal "presenting the image of the sanctity of a temple where truth and justice seemed to be enthroned and to be personified in their decrees."
