The Evangelical Revival (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Evangelical Revival England from the Reformation to the Oxford Movement the result has been the production of a work of which, at the present date, after the Great War, he cannot expect to obtain publication, both on account of the high cost of printing and of the paucity of purchasers of expen sive works. He has accordingly deemed it advisable to issue the work broken up into periods. And he ventures to send forth the portion dealing with the final period before publishing the rest, because it is that which is of more immediate interest to the present generation, dealing as it does with the rise of Evangelicalism, in the Calvinism of Whitefield and the Evangelical Fathers in the Church, and in Lutheranism which found its apostle in John Wesley. The Evangelical Revival and Other Sermons

Book Description

Excerpt from The Evangelical Revival and Other Sermons: With an Address on the Work of the Christian Ministry in a Period of Theological Decay and Transition It is possible that many persons may think that I have exaggerated the extent to which the theolo gical theories of the Evangelical leaders have been surrendered by modern Evangelicals; and it is not possible to give definite proofs that my opinion on this point is correct. But in all parts of the country it seems to me that there is theological restlessness. I constantly meet with men who hold the substance of the Evan gelical Faith, but who declare themselves dissatisfied with the intellectual representation of it, which has become a tradition in Evangelical Churches. I think, too, that there are the clearest signs that even those who stand fast by the Evangelical definitions of the last century are not likely to have many suc cessors. The Great Awakening

Book Description

Excerpt from The Great Awakening: A History of the Revival of Religion in the Time of Edwards and Whitefield During the year 1840, public meetings were held in some places, and proposed in others, in commemoration of what Edwards called The Revival of Religion in New England in This first suggested to the au thor the design of the present work. No history of that revival had ever been attempted. Its importance in it self, and in its influence on the subsequent state of the churches, was universally acknowledged. Yet opinions concerning it were various and discordant, even among evangelical ministers; some thinking it worthy of un mixed eulogy in public celebrations, others speaking of it with only guarded and qualified commendation, and others doubting whether it should not be mentioned rath er with censure than otherwise. For the last ten years, too, the advocates of all kinds of measures, new and old, have been asserting that the events and results of that revival justified their several theories and practices. There was, therefore, evident need of a work, which should furnish the means of suitably appreciating both the good and the evil of that period of religious history. The next question was concerning its possibility. Could materials be found, for the construction of such a work? A slight investigation was sufficient to furnish an answer. The public libraries contain abundant materials, of which some account must now be given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Revivals and Revival Work (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Revivals and Revival Work The subject matter of this little volume was prepared originally as a new chapter for the authors work on Homiletics and Pastoral Theology, and, as here produced, was printed from plates made for that work. Owing to this fact, the form of its present appearance is different from what it otherwise would have been, and the foot notes, some of which refer to the preceding chapters of the larger work, necessarily appear in this volume. Of course, an exhaustive treatment of so important and broad a subject as that which forms our title would be impossible within the limits of so small a volume as this. Trusting, however, that, with all its imperfections, it will be found to contain some inspiring thoughts for devout readers, and some valuable hints and suggestions to those who aspire to be useful in winning souls, this unpretentious contribution to the literature of revivals is now commended to the Christian public by The Author. Boston Revival, 1842

Book Description

Excerpt from Boston Revival, 1842: A Brief History of the Evangelical Churches of Boston, Together With a More Particular Account of the Revival of 1842 It Was a remark of President Edwards, that nothing tended mor'e to promote the work ofgrace among his people at Northampton, than to tell them what God was doing in other places If oral narratives produced this effect, then may we expect that written narratives will accomplish the same purpose. With a desire to honor God, and advance the interests of his kingdom, Edwards Wrote and published a work entitled Surprising Contrera sions at Northampton. Mr. Whitefield, before he came to this country, read this narrative, and was deeply inter-a asted in it. This induced him to visit Edwards, that he might see and converse with the man by whom God had wrought Such wonders. If Edwards judged it expe dient in his day, to collect and publish facts concerning the revival at Northampton, We shall not be thought to undertake a needless Work, if we shall attempt to gather up the history of the revival that took place in this city during the last winter and spring.
