Love for Sale is the first study to examine the ubiquity of commercial sex in Russian literary and artistic production from the nineteenth century through the fin de siècle. Colleen Lucey offers a compelling account of how the figure of the sex worker captivated the public's imagination through depictions in fiction and fine art, bringing to light how imperial Russians grappled with the issue of sexual commerce. Studying a wide range of media—from little-known engravings that circulated in newspapers to works of canonical fiction—Lucey shows how writers and artists used the topic of prostitution both to comment on women's shifting social roles at the end of tsarist rule and to express anxieties about the incursion of capitalist transactions in relations of the heart. Each of the book's chapters focus on a type of commercial sex, looking at how the street walker, brothel worker, demimondaine, kept woman, impoverished bride, and madam traded in sex as a means to acquire capital. Lucey argues that prostitution became a focal point for imperial Russians because it signaled both the promises of modernity and the anxieties associated with Westernization. Love for Sale integrates historical analysis, literary criticism, and feminist theory and conveys how nineteenth-century beliefs about the "fallen woman" drew from medical, judicial, and religious discourse on female sexuality. Lucey invites readers to draw a connection between rhetoric of the nineteenth century and today's debate on sex workers' rights, highlighting recent controversies concerning Russian sex workers to show how imperial discourse is recycled in the twenty-first century.




Figures of Desire and Disgrace

This dissertation examines the commodification of marginal women in nineteenth-century Russian literature and visual culture. Female characters that operate on the margins of society-prostitutes, courtesans, and kept women-move to the center of literary discussions on deviance, sexuality, consumerism, and desire. Looking at portrayals of such "fallen women," I show how writers and artists depict the influence of market demands on gender relations. By considering these depictions through performance studies and Foucault's theories on sexuality, I demonstrate how the age codified ideologies of gender, class, and commercial culture. The figure of the commercial woman appears in much of nineteenth-century Russian literature as a medium to explore deviant sexuality. Like their contemporaries in Western Europe, Russian writers take up the question of commercial sex within medical, sociological, religious, and aesthetic beliefs concerning how such women come to their trade, what to make of their appearance in public domains, and whether or not they deserve or are capable of rehabilitation. My analysis of the portrayal of prostitution demonstrates that authors like Nikolai Gogol', Fedor Dostoevskii, and Vsevolod Garshin investigate the commercial woman's narrative within the context of the Petersburg myth, stressing her need for salvation. Whereas writers see the prostitute as a physical representation of the darker side of capitalism and thus portray her sympathetically, the courtesan and kept woman are seen as dangerous exploiters of male sexual desire. By profiting from their sex and avoiding the traditional duties of wife and mother, women of the demimonde pose a serious threat to social and moral norms. Dismayed at the power such women could acquire, lithographers and caricaturists ridicule them as conspicuous consumers. In response to such negative conceptualizations of the fallen woman, Vsevolod Krestovskii and Dostoevskii imagine her within the confines of melodrama, stressing the tragic elements in a kept woman's narrative. Whether in art or in literature, the marginal woman reveals nineteenth-century anxieties about the commodification of sex and the fear of women's sexual and financial liberation.

Perestroika and the end of the Soviet Union transformed every aspect of life in Russia, and as hope began to give way to pessimism, popular culture came to reflect the anxiety and despair felt by more and more Russians. Free from censorship for the first time in Russia's history, the popular culture industry (publishing, film, and television) began to disseminate works that featured increasingly explicit images and descriptions of sex and violence. In Overkill, Eliot Borenstein explores this lurid and often-disturbing cultural landscape in close, imaginative readings of such works as You're Just a Slut, My Dear! (Ty prosto shliukha, dorogaia!), a novel about sexual slavery and illegal organ harvesting; the Nympho trilogy of books featuring a Chechen-fighting sex addict; and the Mad Dog and Antikiller series of books and films recounting, respectively, the exploits of the Russian Rambo and an assassin killing in the cause of justice. Borenstein argues that the popular cultural products consumed in the post-perestroika era were more than just diversions; they allowed Russians to indulge their despair over economic woes and everyday threats. At the same time, they built a notion of nationalism or heroism that could be maintained even under the most miserable of social conditions, when consumers felt most powerless. For Borenstein, the myriad depictions of deviance in pornographic and also detectiv fiction, with their patently excessive and appalling details of social and moral decay, represented the popular culture industry's response to the otherwise unimaginable scale of Russia's national collapse. "The full sense of collapse," he writes, "required a panoptic view that only the media and culture industry were eager to provide, amalgamating national collapse into one master narrative that would then be readily available to most individuals as a framework for understanding their own suffering and their own fears."




The Society Tale in Russian Literature

This collection of essays is the first book to appear on the society tale in nineteenth-century Russian fiction. Written by a team of British and American scholars, the volume is based on a symposium on the society tale held at the University of Bristol in 1996. The essays examine the development of the society tale in Russian fiction, from its beginnings in the 1820s until its subsumption into the realist novel, later in the century. The contributions presented vary in approach from the text or author based study to the generic or the sociological. Power, gender and discourse theory all feature strongly and the volume should be of considerable interest to students and scholars of nineteenth-century Russian literature. There are essays covering Pushkin, Lermontov, Odoevsky and Tolstoi, as well as more minor writers, and more general and theoretical approaches.
