The Fresh-water Fishes of Siam, Or Thailand

Book Description

The main purpose of this work is to make known, by means of a comprehensive and not too technical account, the nature, extent, and richness of the fish fauna inhabiting the fresh waters of the ancient Kingdom of Siam; to described the relationships of the various groups; and to indicate what further collecting of specimens is necessary or likely to prove profitable scientifically. It is the intention to take cognizance herein of every species of fresh-water fish known from or ascribed to Thailand.

Freshwater Biodiversity in Asia

Book Description

World Bank Discussion Paper No. 337. Draws on household survey data from 87 rural villages in Bangladesh to examine the contribution that government family planning programs, as well as other health care interventions, have made toward the recent reduction in fertility by increasing contraceptive use and reducing infant mortality. The paper suggests that the programs have been effective and finds that targeted credit program placement, such as the Grameen Bank and the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), contributed to the effort as well.

Freshwater Fishes of the Eastern Himalayas

Book Description

Freshwater Fishes of the Eastern Himalayas provides a guide to describe the internationally accepted methods used in the accurate identification of fishes, morphometry, i.e., body proportions, meristics, i.e., counts of countable characters, viz., scales, fin rays, pores, vertebrae etc., characters of bones wherever necessary, special characters, viz., serrations of fin spines, axillary lobes, lobes, color patterns, etc. All the available taxa of the region are covered, making this an essential reference that provides the original description of genera and species. Diagnostic characters in the book can be easily examined by an unaided eye or by a binocular dissecting microscope with transmitted light. - Provides diagnostic characters which are unique for a species or a combination of characters to differentiate each species from its congeners - Includes both verbal and technical aspects, along with color illustrations of the particular part of the fish showing the distinguishing character - Presents diagnostic characters, illustrations or images of the fish and of its parts, showing the unique character and distribution to make it easy for species identification

Patterns in Freshwater Fish Ecology

Book Description

This book is about freshwater fish in streams, lakes, reservoirs, and special habitats around the world. It addresses approximately twenty major topics in freshwater fish ecology in a format suitable for use in graduate-level courses. The book focuses on basic ecology and contains much data from fisheries ecology. Dr. Matthews explains the way in which empirical studies, theoretical concepts, and experimental evaluations blend into the current state-of-the-art with respect to each major topic, and provides original data and interpretations on some points as well as new syntheses. Each chapter contains empirical information, a synthesis, and a summary.

An Annotated Checklist and Key to the Snakes of Mexico

Book Description

This bulletin supplies checklists and keys for identification of Mexican snake species. This work arose partially out of a joint, active interest resulting from a collecting trip to Mexico in 1932. Additionally, in gathering information, the authors studied specimens in the United States National Museum and other collections. The authors acknowledge that this treatise can be revised over the years as new materials are found and described. Where available, the authors have included United States National Museum catalog numbers for type specimens in the species descriptions.

Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management

Book Description

The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.
