The Gypsies of Yetholm

Book Description

Kirk Yetholm is a small village in the Scottish Borders region that for centuries was known as the headquarters of the Romani people (Gypsies) in Scotland. Brockie's ethnographic study attempts to capture the "peculiar characteristics or idiosyncrasies" of the Yetholm Gypsies "before they are absorbed in the general population of the land, and consequently lost to view." He examines important historical figures and events and briefly addresses those aspects of Gypsy life that you might expect to find in an ethnographic work: myths, religion, cookery, marriages and divorces, funerals, names, language, colonies, dance and music, education, fortune-telling, child-stealing, fairs, habits, home life, and humor. In the Miscellanea, Brockie asks the question, "Was John Bunyan a Gypsy?" The work concludes with a bibliography, "for the curious reader," of other works concerning Gypsies.
