The House of Hohenzollern and the Hapsburg Monarchy (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The House of Hohenzollern and the Hapsburg Monarchy As regards Prussia we may speak in a different tone. Here at least we are not restrained by respect for the sacredness of the head of the German Empire. The learned minions on the banks of the Spree may dream of a great Emperor of the house of Borussia and proclaim Prussian hegemony, with all its glorious lordliness, but thus far the long fingers of the Hohen zollern have not yet succeeded in grasping the crown of Charlemagne and dump ing it into the same bag with so many Polish and Saxon jewels. It is true that recently many friends of the Fatherland have desired the enlarge ment of Prussia and hoped to see in the kings the masters of a united Germany. The Habsburg Monarchy, 1618-1815

Book Description

This is a revised and updated edition of a highly acclaimed history of the early modern Habsburg monarchy. Charles W. Ingrao challenges the conventional notion of Habsburg state and society as peculiarly backward by tracing its emergence as a military and cultural power of enormous influence. The Habsburg monarchy was undeniably different from other European polities: geography and linguistic diversity made this inevitable, but by 1789 it had laid the groundwork for a single polity capable of transcending its uniquely diverse cultural and historic heritage. Charles W. Ingrao unravels the web of social, political, economic and cultural factors that shaped the Habsburg monarchy during the period, and presents this complex story in a manner that is both authoritative and accessible to non-specialists. This edition includes a revised text and bibliographies, new genealogical tables, and an epilogue which looks forward to the impact of the Habsburg monarchy on twentieth-century events.

The Whirlpool of Europe

Book Description

Excerpt from The Whirlpool of Europe: Austria-Hungary and the Habsburgs No attempt has been made, either in text or illustra tions, to do justice to the wonderful scenery which is the framework of this picture of national and political evo lation. To do so would involve not one but several volumes, and the present work is merely an outline which the reader may fill in at his leisure by reference to more detailed studies. The authors feel that the historical sketch may alarm some readers by its scope, but it was found impossible to give a true impression of modern Austria and Hungary without tracing their connection with the extinct Holy Roman Empire and the modern German one, or without following, from its earliest stages, the career of the House of Habsburg. The key to the situa tion lies to a great extent in the historical evolution of the various parts of the Dual Monarchy and in their relations to the ruling house. The Southern Slav Question

Book Description

Excerpt from The Southern Slav Question: And the Habsburg Monarchy The political problem to which the present volume is devoted, and which has come to be widely known as the Southern Slav question, deals with a more limited field. This question in its present-day bearings, may be defined as the problem of serbo-croatian unity. Its centre Of gravity lay, even before the annexation of Bosnia, within the bounds of the Habsburg Monarchy and it is in Croatia and Bosnia that it must reach its solution. With this Bulgaria has nothing directly to do 1 and may therefore be eliminated from the present survey. For an entirely different reason the Slovenes are omitted. They have no distinct history of their own their voice cannot be decisive in any solution of the problem and urgent reasons of strategy and geography make it impossible for them to be included in any unified Southern Slav state of the immediate future.
