The Routledge Handbook of Defence Studies provides a comprehensive collection of essays on contemporary defence studies by leading international scholars. Defence studies is a multi-disciplinary study of how agents, predominantly states, prepare for and go to war. Whereas security studies has been broadened and stretched to cover at times the near totality of international and domestic affairs, and war studies has come to mean not just operations and tactics but also experiences and outcomes, defence studies remains a coherent area of study primarily aimed at how defence policy changes over time and in relation to stimulating factors such as alterations in power, strategy and technology. This new Handbook offers a complete landscape of this area of study and contributes to a review of defence studies in terms of policy, security and war, but also looks forward to new challenges to existing conceptions of defence and how this is changing as states and their militaries also change. The volume is divided into four thematic sections: Defence as Policy; Defence Practice; Operations and Tactics; and Contemporary Defence Issues. The ability to review the field while also looking forward to further research is an important element of a sustainable text on defence studies. In as much as this volume is able to highlight the main themes of defence studies, it also offers an in-depth look into how defence issues can be examined and compared in a contemporary setting. Anni Baker has created a fascinating exploration of life in the armed forces, as it has been experienced by millions of men, women, and children over the past six decades. Her book examines the factors that shape military service and military culture, from grueling training exercises to sexual relations with local women, from overseas duty to the peculiar life of the military brat. The book begins with an examination of the enlistment process, follows the military lifecycle through career decisions, promotions, raising families, and retirement, explores the impact of war on military society, and ends with a discussion of the place of the armed forces in the United States. The body of scholarship in all languages on officer social origins, selection, education, and training since the eighteenth century is extensive. This bibliography is limited to sources published in English and represents but a fraction of the available literature. Although there are exceptions in each instance, the general criteria used in determining the sources to be included in the bibliography were: secondary works published since approximately 1945; scholarship from all disciplines, with an emphasis on historical studies; and world-wide coverage since the eighteenth century at all levels, from initial entry through advanced officer education and training programs. Exceptions to the post-1945 distinction are histories of military education and training institutions, such as precommissioning academies, and staff and war colleges. Memoirs are not included; neither are the many government and internal military service reports on officer education and training, except in the case of the United States after 1945. The first section of the bibliography is devoted to general and comparative studies. Subsequent entries are organized alphabetically by country, and, within each national section, alphabetically by author's last name. In addition to sections for individual nations in Africa and Latin America, there are separate sections listing general works on officer development in those regions. Previous bibliographies in this series were limited to sources held by the USAF Academy Library. This bibliography, however, also lists works not found in the Academy Library's collection. Nevertheless, the overwhelming majority are available at the Academy Library and are identified by call number.




The British Army and the People's War, 1939-1945

During the Second World War the British army absorbed approximately three million new recruits, the majority of whom were conscripts. Drawn from all occupational groups and social classes, the military authorities were confronted with the task of molding these civilians in uniform into an effective fighting force. This book analyzes the impact of this process of integration on the army as a social institution. Exploring such aspects of the army’s social organization as other rank selection, officer selection, officer promotion, officer-man relations, the soldier’s working life, army welfare, and army education, it assesses the ways in which the army changed in relation to its new intake, what the extent of any change that took place actually was, and how different the army of 1945 was to that of 1939.
