In Hunting Nature, Thomas P. Hodge explores Ivan Turgenev's relationship to nature through his conception, description, and practice of hunting—the most unquenchable passion of his life. Informed by an ecocritical perspective, Hodge takes an approach that is equal parts interpretive and documentarian, grounding his observations thoroughly in Russian cultural and linguistic context and a wide range of Turgenev's fiction, poetry, correspondence, and other writings. Included within the book are some of Turgenev's important writings on nature—never previously translated into English. Turgenev, who is traditionally identified as a chronicler of Russia's ideological struggles, is presented in Hunting Nature as an expert naturalist whose intimate knowledge of flora and fauna deeply informed his view of philosophy, politics, and the role of literature in society. Ultimately, Hodge argues that we stand to learn a great deal about Turgenev's thought and complex literary technique when we read him in both cultural and environmental contexts. Hodge details how Turgenev remains mindful of the way textual detail is wedded to the organic world—the priroda that he observed, and ached for, more keenly than perhaps any other Russian writer.

Originally published in 1975. In Mountain Sheep and Man in the Northern Wilds Valerius Geist, a renowned scientist, sensitive observer, and natural storyteller here recounts his experiences among, and reflections upon, the magnificent bighorned sheep of the Canadian wilderness, where he lived and worked year 'round. The book presents popular science in the best sense -- beautifully written, unmistakably accurate, innovative and thought provoking. In the book, Dr. Geist focuses on cold climates to study animal behavior and its implications for man. He makes valuable contributions to our knowledge about aggression and dominance and offers new insights into the impact of ecological factors upon the anatomy, physiology and behavior of man as well as beast. He looks critically at the role of early and modern man as hunter and tells delightful stories about his own adventures in working with big-game animals. His splendid photographs capture his enthusiasm for the land and the sheep. Finally, he ponders the lessons that urban man can learn from zoological theory so that he may better live within his ecological means. "To the names Fraser Darling, Murie, Schaller, Carpenter and Goodall must now be added Geist." Science "This book is about wilderness, animals and people. These subjects are woven together in a way that will curl your toes. Geist is an excellent writer; he has a probing mind a tempered wit and an ability to convey a total experience. Be sure to read this one." Frontiers. "Geist writes surpassingly well." Canadian Field Naturalist "This is a very well written book that will intrigue the most ingenious thinker. It reflects originality and provides accurate and interesting reading to anyone interested in wild animals." Journal of Wildlife Management "This book is immensely thought provoking." Mammal Review Valerius Geist is a graduate of the University of British Columbia, where he also received his Ph.D. He is professor emeritus of environmental science at the University of Calgary.

AN ARDENT ENVIRONMENTALIST AND HUNTER SEEKS OUR PROPER RELATIONSHIP TO THE ANIMAL WORLD For all readers who are perplexed over humanity's proper relationship to animals, Ted Kerasote's provocative exploration of the ancient human urge to hunt will dramatize the issues that fuel this controversial debate. In his opening section, "Food" the author travels to the frozen shores of coastal Greenland, living and hunting with Inuit villagers-true hunter-gatherers-who are utterly dependent for sustenance on the seals, polar bears, and narwhal that they can wrest from their punishing environment. In "Trophies," Kerasote accompanies the first Western sportsmen permitted into a remote stretch of Siberian wilderness, one of whom uses unethical stratagems to bag the worlds most coveted hunting trophy. In "Webs," we meet a hunter caught between these two extremes-the writer himself. Stalking elk near his home in Wyoming, seeking a winter's worth of meat, Kerasote encounters the pall of himself that yearns to make the kill and take the wild creature's life force into his own body. Nearing the end of his odyssey, the author attends meetings of the Fund for Animals with the organization's director, a vehement opponent of hunting. Kerasote also examines the ecological consequences of eating food produced by our agri-business system and transported in fossil fuel-consuming refrigerator trucks; next he considers the environmental impact of the death of the prey that has given its life to the hunter. Scrupulously balanced, Bloodties is a memorable book for all lovers of the outdoors-both hunters and nonhunters-and a landmark in the evolving discussion of our proper relationship to the animal world.
