This monograph likewise includes a discussion of the county archaeological society and museums that are concerned with South Buckinghamshire antiquities, such as the Buckinghamshire Record Society, High Wycombe Museum, and Council for British Archaeology. This publication is suitable for archeologists, historians, and investigators concerned with the archaeology of South Buckinghamshire.

From the acclaimed author of The Wild Places and Underland, an exploration of walking and thinking In this exquisitely written book, Robert Macfarlane sets off from his Cambridge, England, home to follow the ancient tracks, holloways, drove roads, and sea paths that crisscross both the British landscape and its waters and territories beyond. The result is an immersive, enthralling exploration of the ghosts and voices that haunt old paths, of the stories our tracks keep and tell, and of pilgrimage and ritual. Told in Macfarlane’s distinctive voice, The Old Ways folds together natural history, cartography, geology, archaeology and literature. His walks take him from the chalk downs of England to the bird islands of the Scottish northwest, from Palestine to the sacred landscapes of Spain and the Himalayas. Along the way he crosses paths with walkers of many kinds—wanderers, pilgrims, guides, and artists. Above all this is a book about walking as a journey inward and the subtle ways we are shaped by the landscapes through which we move. Macfarlane discovers that paths offer not just a means of traversing space, but of feeling, knowing, and thinking.

This title is one of Thomas's essays on travel, which portraits the English countryside enriched with interesting historical details. Edward Thomas (1878-1917) was a British poet, essayist, and novelist. Thomas's poems are noted for their attention to the English countryside and a certain colloquial style. His career in poetry only came after he had already been a successful writer and literary critic. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France. The short poem In Memoriam exemplifies how his poetry blends the themes of war and the countryside. "Much has been written of travel, far less of the road. Writers have treated the road as a passive means to an end, and honoured it most when it has been an obstacle; they leave the impression that a road is a connection between two points which only exists when the traveller is upon it." (Edward Thomas, The Icknield Way)

The White Peak Way is a 90-mile circular walk amongst the spectacular scenery of the Derbyshire Peak District. It explores the hills and dales of the limestone country and the gritstone moors and edges to the east. It also visits many notable landmarks, places of interest and sites of antiquity. The journey is devised into seven comfortable stages, each linked by a youth hostel (bureau booking service available), although the walk is equally well served by campsites and camping barns, and by Bed & Breakfast accommodation.

The author lives at the very centre of England, literally, as his Oxfordshire village is the geographical point furthest from the sea, and from there he travelled out to England's furthest edges. This title tells about his journey and the characters he met along the way.
