This book examines knowledge traditions that held together the fluid and overlapping maritime worlds of the Indian Ocean in the premodern period, as evident in the material and archaeological record. It breaks new ground by shifting the focus from studying cross-pollination of ideas from textual sources to identifying this exchange of ideas in archaeological and historical documentation. The themes covered in the book include conceptualization of the seas and maritime landscapes in Sanskrit, Arabic and Chinese narratives; materiality of knowledge production as indicated in the archaeological record of communities where writing on stone first appears; and anchoring the coasts, not only through an understanding of littoral shrines and ritual landscapes, but also by an analysis of religious imagery on coins, more so at the time of the introduction of new religions such as Islam in the Indian Ocean around the eighth century. This volume will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of archaeology, anthropology, museum and heritage studies, Indian Ocean studies, maritime studies, South and Southeast Asian studies, religious studies and cultural studies.

"Money may seem hopelessly mundane and culturally meaningless, but it has dominated--and documented--world history since the time of the ancient Greeks. This heavily illustrated book provides a spirited account of the first coinages and their living descendants in our pockets and purses. It explains how people from Jesus to The Beatles have used numismatics to explore the social, political, economic, and religious history of the world"--

Douglas Mudd, the Curator of the ANA (American Numismatic Association) Money Museum, describes the extraordinary diversity and beauty of monetary imagery -- an important source of cultural and historical information. This gorgeously illustrated and immensely entertaining book explains the origin and spread of coinage and paper currency. Ranging from the islands of Micronesia to Russia to the United States, All the Money in the World reveals the underlying connections between numismatic imagery and history. Appealing to both experienced numismatists and novices alike, All the Money in the World provides a visually stunning and informative look at money's vital role in shaping both our past and present -- and influencing our hopes and dreams for the future.

The Present Thesis Fulfils A Long Felt Desideratum In The Field Of Numismatical Studies In India. So Far Our Knowledge About Early Medieval Coinage Of India Has Been Very Poor And Pragmentary. A Systematic And Comprehensive Study Of Sporadic Materials Has Been, For The First Time, Successfully Attempted In This Subject. The Author With Industry And Intelligence Has Collected Thematerials, Sorted And Collated Them And Reconstructed The Structure Of His Subject. It Is Based On The Discovery Of New Facts And Fresh Interpretation Of Already Known Facts And Current Theories. It Is Both Exhaustive And Critical. It Positively Forms A Valuable Contribution To The Literature Of Numismatics And Tends Generally To The Advancement Of Knowledge. The Present Work Shows The Painstaking Labour, A Critical Study Of The Subject, And Above All Original Suggestions Which Undoubtedly Enhance The Value Of The Dissertation Like The Present One. The Up-To-Date Bibliography Shows An Extensive Range Of Study In The Political History Of The Dynasties As Well, Without A Thorough Knowledge Of Which The Present Attempt Could Hardly Have Been Possible. The Author Has Rightly Rejected The View Of D.W. Macdowall, On The Coins Of Gangeyadeva. D.W. Macdowall Is No Doubt A Great Numismatist, And I Am Glad To See That A Young Scholar Is Not Afraid To Criticise Eminent Authorities Here As Well As Elsewhere And His Criticisms Are Just And Reasonable. The Magadh University Should Undertake The Task Of The Publication Of This Valuable Work.
