The Infinity Link

Book Description

Mysterious travelers...impossible love... The year is 2034, and at the Sandaran Research Center, a young woman named Mozy participates in a cyberlink experiment via tachyon beam. So intimate is the connection that she falls hopelessly in love with her distant partner, David Kadin, a man she has met only through the link. Upon learning that the project is to be terminated—and wanting desperately to fulfill her dreams—Mozy makes a daring decision. Her choice catapults her into a flight of astounding discovery—one that puts her squarely in the path of a potential war, communication with the whales of Earth, and secret first contact with visitors from the stars. Are the aliens enemies or friends? No one knows, and now it may fall to this young woman alone to discover the truth. Caught in a telepathic link with the Talenki voyagers, Mozy's personal odyssey becomes entwined with the fate of all of Humanity. Combining visionary speculation with passionate human characters, The Infinity Link is an epic work of transcendent science fiction and an exploration into the very nature of humanity. From the Nebula-nominated author of Eternity’s End and recipient of the Frank Herbert Lifetime Achievement Award for science fiction writing. REVIEWS: “A long, ambitious work, painted on a canvas as big as the solar system. The concept itself is even larger—the eventual linkup of various intelligent life forms of our galaxy, including humans, whales and several alien races. Carver carefully sets up his story and develops it in a meticulous fashion...it works very well.” —Publishers Weekly “A complex, rich, and satisfying novel.” —Fantasy Review “A compelling vision of our world on the day after tomorrow.” —Joan D. Vinge, author of The Snow Queen “A satisfying and rewarding visionary experience.” —Analog “A rich novel of immense scope, with the most detailed and brilliant descriptive passages of empathic and telepathic communication. Highly recommended.” —SF and Fantasy Reviews “A book I just couldn’t put down. Murder, mystery, suspense, romance and love—The Infinity Link has it all.” —Taxi Globe “Carver’s most ambitious and most successful work to date. Hopefully a portent of even better things to come.” —Science Fiction Chronicle

Split Infinity

Book Description

On the technological, decadent world of Proton, someone was trying to destroy Stile, serf and master Gamesman. His only escape lay through a mysterious “curtain” revealed by a loving robot. Beyond the curtain lay Phaze—a world totally ruled by magic. There, his first encounter was with an amulet that turned into a demon determined to choke him to death. And there, he soon learned, his alternate self had already been murdered by sorcery, and he was due to be the next victim. “Know thyself!” the infallible Oracle told him. But first he must save himself as he shuttled between worlds. On Proton, his fate depended on winning the great Games. On Phaze, he could survive only by mastering magic. And if he used any magic at all, the werewolf and the unicorn who were his only friends were determined to kill him at once!

Handbook of Knot Theory

Book Description

This book is a survey of current topics in the mathematical theory of knots. For a mathematician, a knot is a closed loop in 3-dimensional space: imagine knotting an extension cord and then closing it up by inserting its plug into its outlet. Knot theory is of central importance in pure and applied mathematics, as it stands at a crossroads of topology, combinatorics, algebra, mathematical physics and biochemistry. * Survey of mathematical knot theory * Articles by leading world authorities * Clear exposition, not over-technical * Accessible to readers with undergraduate background in mathematics

Denial

Book Description

Immortality is something sought after. For generations, perhaps longer... the search is the one thing that never dies. if it were to ever be obtained, what then? Death is to be inevitable. But it doesn't correlate with oblivion. We'll live on in memory.

Random Knotting And Linking

Book Description

This volume includes both rigorous asymptotic results on the inevitability of random knotting and linking, and Monte Carlo simulations of knot probability at small lengths. The statistical mechanics and topology of surfaces on the d-dimensional simple cubic lattice are investigated. The energy of knots is studied both analytically and numerically. Vassiliev invariants are investigated and used in random knot simulations. A mutation scheme which leaves the Jones polynomial unaltered is described. Applications include the investigation of RNA secondary structure using Vassiliev invariants, and the direct experimental measurement of DNA knot probability as a function of salt concentration in random cyclization experiments on linear DNA molecules. The papers in this volume reflect the diversity of interest across science and mathematics in this subject, from topology to statistical mechanics to theoretical chemistry to wet-lab molecular biology.

The Illustrated Network

Book Description

In 1994, W. Richard Stevens and Addison-Wesley published a networking classic: TCP/IP Illustrated. The model for that book was a brilliant, unfettered approach to networking concepts that has proven itself over time to be popular with readers of beginning to intermediate networking knowledge. The Illustrated Network takes this time-honored approach and modernizes it by creating not only a much larger and more complicated network, but also by incorporating all the networking advancements that have taken place since the mid-1990s, which are many. This book takes the popular Stevens approach and modernizes it, employing 2008 equipment, operating systems, and router vendors. It presents an ?illustrated? explanation of how TCP/IP works with consistent examples from a real, working network configuration that includes servers, routers, and workstations. Diagnostic traces allow the reader to follow the discussion with unprecedented clarity and precision. True to the title of the book, there are 330+ diagrams and screen shots, as well as topology diagrams and a unique repeating chapter opening diagram. Illustrations are also used as end-of-chapter questions. A complete and modern network was assembled to write this book, with all the material coming from real objects connected and running on the network, not assumptions. Presents a real world networking scenario the way the reader sees them in a device-agnostic world. Doesn't preach one platform or the other. Here are ten key differences between the two:StevensGoralski's Older operating systems (AIX,svr4,etc.)Newer OSs (XP, Linux, FreeBSD, etc.)Two routers (Cisco, Telebit (obsolete))Two routers (M-series, J-series)Slow Ethernet and SLIP linkFast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and SONET/SDH links (modern)Tcpdump for tracesNewer, better utility to capture traces (Ethereal, now has a new name!)No IPSecIPSecNo multicastMulticastNo router security discussedFirewall routers detailedNo WebFull Web browser HTML considerationNo IPv6IPv6 overviewFew configuration details More configuration details (ie, SSH, SSL, MPLS, ATM/FR consideration, wireless LANS, OSPF and BGP routing protocols - New Modern Approach to Popular Topic Adopts the popular Stevens approach and modernizes it, giving the reader insights into the most up-to-date network equipment, operating systems, and router vendors. - Shows and Tells Presents an illustrated explanation of how TCP/IP works with consistent examples from a real, working network configuration that includes servers, routers, and workstations, allowing the reader to follow the discussion with unprecedented clarity and precision. - Over 330 Illustrations True to the title, there are 330 diagrams, screen shots, topology diagrams, and a unique repeating chapter opening diagram to reinforce concepts - Based on Actual Networks A complete and modern network was assembled to write this book, with all the material coming from real objects connected and running on the network, bringing the real world, not theory, into sharp focus.

Applied Statistics for the Social and Health Sciences

Book Description

Applied Statistics for the Social and Health Sciences provides graduate students in the social and health sciences with the basic skills that they need to estimate, interpret, present, and publish statistical models using contemporary standards. The book targets the social and health science branches such as human development, public health, sociology, psychology, education, and social work in which students bring a wide range of mathematical skills and have a wide range of methodological affinities. For these students, a successful course in statistics will not only offer statistical content but will also help them develop an appreciation for how statistical techniques might answer some of the research questions of interest to them. This book is for use in a two-semester graduate course sequence covering basic univariate and bivariate statistics and regression models for nominal and ordinal outcomes, in addition to covering ordinary least squares regression. Key features of the book include: interweaving the teaching of statistical concepts with examples developed for the course from publicly-available social science data or drawn from the literature thorough integration of teaching statistical theory with teaching data processing and analysis teaching of both SAS and Stata "side-by-side" and use of chapter exercises in which students practice programming and interpretation on the same data set and course exercises in which students can choose their own research questions and data set. This book is for a two-semester course. For a one-semester course, see http://www.routledge.com/9780415991544/

Robust Diagnostic Regression Analysis

Book Description

Graphs are used to understand the relationship between a regression model and the data to which it is fitted. The authors develop new, highly informative graphs for the analysis of regression data and for the detection of model inadequacies. As well as illustrating new procedures, the authors develop the theory of the models used, particularly for generalized linear models. The book provides statisticians and scientists with a new set of tools for data analysis. Software to produce the plots is available on the authors website.

The Infinity Principle

Book Description

Have you ever asked yourself why the world exists, why suffering seems unavoidable, or what the higher purpose of life might be? Well, look no further. This book delivers answers to some of our most enduring questions, clearly revealing the single truth that underpins every other truth. The author observes that while we tend to think of science and religion as opposites, they both try to understand the same reality. The problem is that understanding reality is tricky. Fortunately, the infinity principle tells us that we can understand the fundamental truths about this world. In fact, the answer is close by and is one we can find without scientific knowledge or religious creed. The infinity principle sheds light on our most haunting paradoxes and helps us grasp the ground conditions that rule our journey through space and time. Since the very first why was posed, mankind has pondered the deep enigmas of this world. Finally, a thorough answer is presented, and there is nothing mysterious about it.
