The papers collected here were originally presented at a conference on multinational culture held at Hofstra University to explore the sociocultural impacts of the transformation to a global economy. Written by a distinguished group of contributors from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and North America, the essays address such questions as: Which particular changes have already taken root? How can we assess the efficacy of interventions by nation states and transnational authorities? How are the globe's resources being managed and how should they be managed in the future? Specific topics explored include government policies and their relationship to multinational activities, the formation and regulation of international capital, labor market segmentation and protectionism, managing multinationals without sacrificing ethical standards or profits, environmental impacts, and the language, legal, gender, and race dimensions of a global economy. Following a general introduction, the volume is divided into six groups of chapters, each of which examines a specific aspect of global transition. The contributors first look at the more general issues of global movements and global policies, with articles on critical social movements and the future of the global political economy, the evolution of multinational public policy towards business, and the implications of internationalization for development and welfare in the Third World. The next section describes globalization's reach into the arenas of monetary policy, banking, financing, and debt. Subsequent chapters look at the explicit and implict prejudices and differences that can undermine or enhance our global experience, present case studies of the contradictory imperatives between indigenous culture and globalization, affirm the importance of collective action in protecting labor and the environment, and consider the controversial and multifaceted nature of technology transfer. The diversity of topics and perspectives presented make this an ideal set of supplemental readings for advanced level courses in development economics, political economy, and international economics.




The Cinema of Apartheid

This study analyses the historical development of South African cinema up to he book's original publication in 1988. It describes the films and comments on their relationship to South African realities, addressing all aspects of the industry, focusing on domestic production, but also discussing international film companies who use South Africa as a location. South African National Cinema


Book Description

South African National Cinema examines how cinema in South Africa represents national identities, particularly with regard to race. This significant and unique contribution establishes interrelationships between South African cinema and key points in South Africa’s history, showing how cinema figures in the making, entrenching and undoing of apartheid. This study spans the twentieth century and beyond through detailed analyses of selected films, beginning with De Voortrekkers (1916) through to Mapantsula (1988) and films produced post apartheid, including Drum (2004), Tsotsi (2005) and Zulu Love Letter (2004). Jacqueline Maingard discusses how cinema reproduced and constructed a white national identity, taking readers through cinema’s role in building white Afrikaner nationalism in the 1930s and 1940s. She then moves to examine film culture and modernity in the development of black audiences from the 1920s to the 1950s, especially in a group of films that includes Jim Comes to Joburg (1949) and Come Back, Africa (1959). Jacqueline Maingard also considers the effects of the apartheid state’s film subsidy system in the 1960s and 1970s and focuses on cinema against apartheid in the 1980s. She reflects upon shifting national cinema policies following the first democratic election in 1994 and how it became possible for the first time to imagine an inclusive national film culture. Illustrated throughout with excellent visual examples, this cinema history will be of value to film scholars and historians, as well as to practitioners in South Africa today.

This book presents an expert analysis of the transnational aspects of Finnish cinema throughout its history. As a small nation cinema, Finnish film culture has, even at its most nationalistic, always been attached to developments in other film producing nations in terms of production and distribution as well as genres and aesthetics. Recent developments in film theory offer exciting new approaches and methodologies for the study of transnational phenomena in the field of film culture, both past and present. The authors employ a wide range of cutting edge methodologies in order to address the major issues involved in transnational approaches to film culture. Until recently, much of this research has focused on globalization and questions related to diasporic cinema, while transnational issues related to small nation film cultures have been marginalized. This study focuses on how small nation cinemas have faced the dilemma of contributing to the construction and maintenance of national culture and identity, while responding to audience tastes largely shaped by foreign cinemas. With Finland’s intriguing political placement between East and West, along with the high portion of film history preserved in Finnish archives, this thoroughly contextualized multidisciplinary analysis of Finnish film history serves as an illuminating case study of the transnational aspects of small nation cinemas.
