Iowa Corn Yield Test

Book Description

The 1949 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Book Description

"The Iowa Corn Yield Test is conducted by the Iowa Corn and Small grain Growers' association in cooperation with the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station. The purpose is to compare the performance of hybrids that are offered for sale to farmers. We hope the information in this bulletin will help you to choose the best hybrids available for planting in 1950." -- p. [493]

The 1947 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Book Description

"The Iowa Corn Yield Test is conducted annually to provide impartial comparable performance records on a relatively large number of hybrid combinations. Each hybrid tested is ranked by a performance score based on held, dry matter content of grain, lodging resistance and the percentage of ears held on the stalks. In view of the present world food need, it is important that farmers plant hybrids adapted to their particular locality. The information presented gives a reliable estimate of the relative performance of a considerable number of hybrids when grown in different areas of Iowa." -- p. [865]

The 1943 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Book Description

"The Iowa Corn Yield Test attempts to make available an impartial evaluation of various hybrid combinations in respect to yielding ability, lodging resistance, maturity and other agronomic characteristics. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin may be of value to both the purchaser and the producer of hybrid corn seed, showing as it does the relative performance of various hybrids in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, dropped ears, ear height and damaged corn. A performance score has been used as a means of evaluating relative agronomic value of the different hybrids." -- Purpose, p. [853]

The 1954 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Book Description

"The main purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to compare the performance of corn hybrids and to make the information available to Iowa farmers. In 1954 we tested 90 corn hybrids at each of three locations in the northern section of Iowa. ... One-hundred corn hybrids were compared in each of the other three sections of the state. The hybrids were planted at three locations in each section, but the district 10 field was not harvested because of drouth conditions and a poor stand. They hybrids entered in the 1954 test were planted on about 72 percent of the total Iowa corn acreage, according to results from a survey of farmers. Six characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These were yield, stand, moisture content at harvest, root and stalk lodging, and dropped ears. You will find a performance record for each hybrid for these characteristics in the tables of data. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1954 and the name and address of each entrant is given in the back of the bulletin. When the seed was packeted for planted, each entry was given a number. The entries were known only by this number until after the plots were harvested and the calculations completed. Therefore, no person concerned with the test know the identity of any entry. The presentation of these results does not imply approval of these hybrids by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association or the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station." -- p. [2]

The 1955 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Book Description

"This bulletin reports the results of the thirty-sixth annual Iowa Corn Yield Test. Similar tests have been conducted by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association in Cooperation with the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station since 1920. The purpose of these tests is to provide information to help Iowa farmers select the hybrids best adapted for their areas. More than 100 companies sell closed-pedigree hybrid seed corn in Iowa. Other individuals and companies produce and sell only open-pedigree hybrids. With so many hybrids available, it isn't easy to choose the ones best adapted to a particular farm or location. The function of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to help make this task easier."--Page 3.

The 1953 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Book Description

"In 1953 we tested 229 corn hybrids in the Iowa Corn Yield test. Each hybrid was tested at a minimum of three locations. The division of the state into districts and sections is shown on the map. Seven characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These included yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height and dropped ears. Each hybrid was ranked by a performance score based on yield, moisture and resistance to lodging and dropped ears. You will find records in the tables showing how each hybrid performed for the above characteristics. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1953 is given in the back of this bulletin. A majority of the entries in the test were made by commercial hybrid corn companies. The Iowa Crop Improvement Association also entered 10 widely grown hybrids in each section as determined by a survey of farmers. The purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to determine the performance of hybrids. It is not a contest and should not be confused with the 5-acre Iowa Master Corn Growers Contest." -- Foreword, p. [2]

The 1953 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Book Description

"This bulletin reports the results of the 1956 Iowa Corn Yield Test. The purpose of the report is to provide information to help Iowa farmers select hybrids best adapted for the area in which they live. The presentation of these results does not imply approval or endorsement of these hybrids by any of the cooperating agencies conducting this test." -- p. 3
