The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London, 1836, Vol. 6 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London, 1836, Vol. 6 Above the Diamante the country, as far as the eye could reach from some heights which a party ascended, presented one uniform desolate aspect, a vast extent of loose sandy soil mixed with gravel, destitute of all herbage. The only exception observed was upon the point formed by the confluence of the Dia mante and Negro, where there was a better soil and pasture ground sufficient for the subsistence of a permanent settlement. A position which, Villarino says, for many reasons, would be an admirable one for a permanent military post. At the end of another week they had made little more than ten leagues beyond the mouth of the Diamante, such was the force of the stream against them. The river now began sensibly to alter its course and to run in a s.s.w. Direction, between high preci pitons banks. The Geographical Journal, Vol. 8

Book Description

Excerpt from The Geographical Journal, Vol. 8: Including the Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society; July to December, 1896 Our labours connected with the library have been somewhat retarded by the heavy work entailed upon our stafl' by the recent meeting of the International Geographical Congress; still, good progress has been made. The authors catalogue was completed and published at the close of last session. The work of preparing cards and slips, with the titles of all our books, and of the articles in all the volumes of transac tions and journals, for the subjects catalogue, has steadily advanced, until now upwards of such titles have been written out. It remains to complete the classification of these cards, and the subjects catalogue will at once be available for reference in the library. Mean while, the 00pious bibliography published monthly in the Journal has been cut out, pasted on cards, and classified by Dr. Mill for four years, so that the subjects catalogue is actually complete for all accessions from the present month upwards to 1892. The question of printing must be postponed until the whole is collected on cards, cross-references supplied, and the entries classified. Probably two years will elapse before this is completed; but within six months the arrangement will be sufliciently advanced to make the catalogue a work of very great usefulness to all Fellows of the Society who are engaged in geographical study or research. The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London, 1835, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society of London, 1835, Vol. 5 If the lake ice has been broken into small pieces, these some times pass on to the gulf without encumbering the river, and when they are all gone by, the bridge is replaced, and things remain as before till the arrival of a fresh batch. If, on the contrary, the flakes are large, they get jammed one against the other, and not only remain fixed themselves, but arrest the progress of the suc ceeding masses. Between them, however, are large spaces quite clear of ice. In this state, a violent wind is sometimes sufficient again to detach and break the flakes and allow them to proceed, when the river again becomes free. This, however, is not frequent; and, as we have said, when the large flakes fix, the communication is for a while wholly interrupted, not that the ice will not bear, but because of the unfrozen spaces, so much the more dangerous as they are smaller, for then a pellicle of ice being soon formed they become covered with snow and are hidden.
