The Life and Letters of St. Paul (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Paul Life of Our Lord and Saviour jesus Christ, I undertook the task of preparing a Life of St. Paul and during the interval much has happened to delay its execution. When I under took it, I was minister in the remote Scottish parish of Tulliallan and presently, toward the close of the year 1907, I was translated to St. Andrew's Church in the Perthshire town of Blairgowrie, where I ministered for two happy years. The employments of that large and delightful charge en grossed my time and taxed my scanty strength, leaving me small leisure all the less that my service in preaching was widely requisitioned, and I was continually engaged in the ministry of my British Weekly Correspondence. Then, quite unexpectedly, I was invited by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland to occupy the Chair of Theology in the Londonderry College. Reluctant though I was to leave a people whom I loved and a ministry so rich ahd glad and venture among strangers and untried responsi bilities, I could not but recognise the voice of God in an urgent call addressed to.me not only without solicitation on my part but despite my express will and now, as I review my experience, I bless His gracious providence and thank fully acknowledge the goodness and mercy which have attended me and mine since our coming here. Paul

Book Description

E. P. Sanders offers an expansive introduction to the apostle, navigating some of the thorniest issues in scholarship using language accessible to the novice and seasoned scholar alike. Paul and His Epistles (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Paul and His Epistles WE have called this book Paul and His Epistles, but it might be Paul in His Epistles just as well, for the book aims to be not only an Introduction to the Pauline Epistles but also a Study of the Personality of the Apostle Paul as revealed in them. They are fragments of his life. They are all autobiographical in character. They ought not to be read as treatises in theology, for none of them was intended to be merely theological. They ought to be recognized as the products of personal experience. They ought not to be pre sented dry as dust and dead as a doornail. They are full of vitality. They were written to meet the real needs of real people, and they were written by a man who wore his heart on his sleeve and who never dictated a letter without putting himself wholly and unreservedly into it. We shall endeavor to make this apostle and the peoples to whom he ministered in these epistles live again in these pages, being assured that if we succeed in any measure, we only shall bring to light the life and immortality which has be longed to them by right from the beginning. Book Description

Excerpt from The Story of St. Paul's Life and Letters And even that imperfect story is full of gaps. The biographer was not always present. There were many things that he did not know. Take for example this one sentence out of one of Paul's letters* Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one; thrice was I beaten with rods; once was I stoned; thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep in perils of water, in perils of robbers, in perils among false brethren, in hunger and thirst, in fastings, in cold, in nakedness.
