The Life and Letters of Sydney Dobell (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Sydney Dobell We can only plead that we have endeavoured to 'nothing extenuate, ' and to let the man as he was, speak, in great measure, directly for himself. His deficiencies will appear in the self-revelations of his letters, which also bear frequent, though rarely adequate, witness to the indefinable, and, to all who came in contact with it, the magnetic nobility of a nature too highly strung to be universally appreciated. Sydney Dobell's last book was published in 1856, when he was in his thirty-third year. After that time physical conditions made it impossible for him to complete any important literary work. But even the fragmentary results of his intermittent labour should have a peculiar interest, in an age so strongly marked as our own by the eager revival of those religious and philosophical speculations to which so much of his energy was directed.
