The Life and Letters of William Beckford of Fonthill (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of William Beckford of Fonthill Besides the material already accessible, though never before gathered together, 1 have been so fortunate as to obtain permission to include a very considerable number of letters, hitherto unpublished, written by Beckford between 1777 and 1844; that is to say, from his seven teenth to the last year of his long life. Beckford left his property to his surviving daughter, Susan Euphemia, wife of Alexander, tenth Duke of Hamilton; and, though his books and pictures have been dispersed, his correspondence and papers have been preserved in the Charter Room of Hamilton Palace. By the courtesy of the present Duke of Hamilton I have examined the letters and manuscripts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Memoirs of William Beckford of Fonthill, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Memoirs of William Beckford of Fonthill, Vol. 1 of 2 IT was naturally to be expected that before this time some remembrances of one of the most re markable men of his day would have appeared in an authentic shape. Every hour after the death of the individual carries into oblivion some trait of character or peculiarity which distin guished him from other men. Delay in such cases is dangerous. If, said a distinguished writer, a life be delayed until interest and envy are at an end, we may hope for impartiality, but must expect little intelligence; for the incidents which give excellence to biography are of a vola tile and evanescent kind, such as soon escape the memory, and are rarely transmitted by tra dition. He was not of a robust constitution, although his flow of nervous energy must have been considerable. Slender rather than stout, he had nothing of weight or muscular power in his frame or appearance. Sensitive and alive to the slightest cause of emotion, he was quick to anger, to pity, or to vol. II. B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
