Excerpt from The Life and Times of the Empress Pulcheria: A. D. 399 A. D. 452 Some word of explanation should be offered for that rarity of references in the following pages which may be held to detract from their worth. The writer dares not claim for her book any value save that arising from the freshness of her subject. In the whole range of literature dealing with the later Roman Empire, there is no history of the Augusta Pulcheria apart from such incidental attention as she receives at the hands of modern historians, and apart from brief notices in the old Chronicles and in fragments of lost works. The period in which she lived has, however, been much studied, and in attempting to arrange an historical background whereby to throw into relief this shadowy Empress, the writer has been content to draw upon the common, obvious and well-accredited sources of information. It is because the pretensions of the book are modest that its pages are not strewn with references, and other evidences of original research. It has, in these respects, been built upon the labours of historians like Tillemont, Finlay, Hefele and others. The object of the work has been not to contribute anything fresh to history, but to rescue the personality of Saint Pulcheria. This Handbook is the first to consider the interrelated subjects of gender and sexuality in the Eastern Roman Empire from an interdisciplinary perspective. Drawing on both modern theories and Byzantine perceptions, and considering multiple periods and religions (Eastern Orthodox, Islamic, and Jewish), it provides evidentiary textual and visual material support for an analysis of the two linked themes. Broadly, the essays demonstrate that gender and sexual constructs in Byzantium were porous. As a result, they expand our knowledge of not only how sex and gender were conceived and performed but also how ideas and practices shaped Byzantine life. The Routledge Handbook of Gender and Sexuality in Byzantium will be an indispensable guide for students and scholars of late antique and Byzantine religion, history, culture, and art, who will find it a useful critical survey of current scholarship and one that shines new light in their areas of research. The focus on issues of gender and sexuality may also be of interest to individuals concerned with Eastern Mediterranean culture, as well as to the broader public. Published in 1994: The period surveyed in this anthology extends from the eve of Christianity's triumph, in the third century, to the new age of expansion in the fifteenth century, an age marked by the advent of printing pressed, the European discovery of the Caribbean islands, which Columbus called the Indies, the relentless stripping of medieval altars by Church reformists, and perhaps a diminution of female autonomy.
