The Life and Works of Charles Lamb, Vol. 5 of 12 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life and Works of Charles Lamb, Vol. 5 of 12 They are here restored, as nearly as possible in the order of their composition. Again, after Lamb's death his literary executors - who had better rea son than we can have for knowing which of the fugitive verses written between 1830 and his death in 1834 Lamb most valued - added in the subse quent editions of his writings some half a dozen pieces that had appeared in newspapers and jour nals. These have been accordingly retained in the present edition. But other occasional verses - a few translations, epilogues and prologues, epigrams and political squibs, which have been of late years care fully gleaned by editors of Lamb, are not here ih cluded, and the volume makes no claim, in their sense of the word, to possess the merit of complete ness. Without suggesting or believing that even the lightest trifles of a humorist like Lamb are not worthy of preservation, I yet cherish a strong opinion that when a writer has himself chosen for the people of his best, that best should be at least kept separate from matter of less worth. Acting on the same principle, I have left for a concluding volume (should it be called for) those slighter prose essays and jaw d'esprz't which have been collected of late years, and entitled not, I think, very felici tously, Eliana. The Life of Charles Lamb (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life of Charles Lamb It has been my aim to collect and fuse into a single narrative the sum of this scattered information. As in carrying out that task I have tried as far as possible to keep the story of Lamb's life in his own and his sister's words and in those of their con temporaries, my part will be found to be less that of author than of stage-manager. Thanks to the good sense of the Lambs' friends in preserving their letters, and to Lamb's own inveterate habit of autobiography the more my character comes to be known, he wrote, the less will my veracity come to be suspected the task has not been a very difficult one. The Life, Letters and Writings of Charles Lamb, Vol. 3 of 6

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life, Letters and Writings of Charles Lamb, Vol. 3 of 6: Edited, With Notes and Illustrations A larger volume of the Essays of Charles Lamb was issued from the Athenaeum Press by the present editor in February, 1904. Since then, the Essays of Elia (first Series) having been included in the College Entrance Requirements, this edi tion has been prepared with special reference to the needs of our secondary schools. Although much of the matter of the earlier and fuller work has been used, this book is in many respects a new one. Not to infringe upon the rights of the teacher, the beautiful and pathetic story of Lamb's life has been left untold, and only a few suggestions as to methods of study have been made. To avoid similar sins against the pupil, the plan of not giving information that is easily accessible has been adhered to. The right of personal research - a whole some stimulus to interest - is respected in this edition, but help is offered where help is needed. In criticism, analyses of style and structure, and in notes on recondite allusions, the book will, I believe, be found reasonably full. Charles Lamb (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Charles Lamb This Memoir was originally published in the Men of Letters Series, edited by Mr. John Morley. In revising it for the present Edition, I have not materi ally altered its form and scale, but in the six years that have elapsed since its first appearance new facts have come to light, especially affecting the earlier and more obscure years of Charles Lamb's life. The archives of the Inner Temple, the Burial Registers of various churches, the Will of Samuel Salt, the more careful arrangement of Lamb's Letters, besides information from private sources, have enabled me to make additions to the second and third chapters of this book, whereby the early career of Lamb is now told more fully and accurately than before. Some footnotes have also been added References in the book to Lamb's Letters are to my Edition of his Correspondence, in two volumes, uniform with the present.
