Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. George Herbert: With Remarks on His Writings, and a Sketch of His Life Earl of Pembroke if he knew the orator, who bore the fame name; whofe anfwer was, that he knew him very well, and that he was his kinfman; but that he loved him more for his learning and virtue, than for that he was of his name and family; at which the King fmiled, and aflced the Earl, that he might love him too; for he took him to be the jewel of the Univerfity. This brought him into the funfhine of royal favour, and on the King's frequent hunting vifits to New market and Royfion, and thence to Cambridge, the orator was afforded many opportunities to ingratiate him felf more and more in the el'timation of the Monarch, who declared that he found his learning and wifdom much above his age and wit.
