Mr. Robert Lindsay of this city, who is in business (data 1881) with George Brute's Sons & Co., 13 Chambers street, traces his ancestry to Glasgow, Scotland. There are other Lindsays in this city, but have not been able to ascertain any thing of their families beyond what is here recorded. Early marriages of Lindsays here. October 4, 1763, Elizabeth Lindsay to Hugh Phillips. 1763, William Lindsay to Elizabeth Pell. May 26,1779, Grace Lindsay to John Megger. 1772, Hugh Lindsay to Sarah Delaplain. 1783, Margaret Lindsay to John King. *The early forefather of the following family was William Lindsay of Stirling, Scotland (son of one Alexander Lindsay of Scotland), who emigrated to America directly from Scotland, and landed in New York somewhere in 1800 or 1799; he kept a journal, but it is now lost to his descendants, who would thus have had more knowledge of him and his ancestry. Am indebted to the courtesy of Mr. Gilbert R. Lindsay of Rahway, for the above record. The elder son, Gilbert Robertson Lindsay, married Susanna Brown of New York city, who survives her husband, aged eighty-two years. By this marriage they had issue -- Gilbert...
