"Will always hold an honorable place for bibliophiles." — The University of Chicago Press One of the earliest treatises on the value of preserving neglected manuscripts, building a library, and book collecting, Richard De Bury's The Philobiblon was written in 1345 and circulated widely in manuscript form for over a century. The first printed edition appeared in Cologne in 1473, and several others soon followed as the invention of the printing press spread throughout the late Medieval world. The chapter titles of this legendary work reflect its nature, combining the author's love for and commitment to the importance of books and the knowledge they contain with thoughts on collecting them, lending them, teaching with them, and simply enjoying them: "That the Treasure of Wisdom is chiefly contained in books," "What we are to think of the price in the buying of books," "Who ought to be special lovers of books," and "Of the manner of lending all our books to students." The Prologue ends with the following thought: "And this treatise (divided into twenty chapters) will clear the love we have had for books from the charge of excess, will expound the purpose of our intense devotion, and will narrate more clearly than light all the circumstances of our undertaking. And because it principally treats of the love of books, we have chose after the fashion of the ancient Romans fondly to name it by a Greek word, Philobiblon." This volume offers modern bibliophiles a splendid edition of one of the first books ever to study, define, and, above all, praise their passion: the all-encompassing love of books.

This book presents the collectors’ roles as prominently as the collections of books and texts which they assembled. Contributors explore the activities and networks shaping a range of continental and transcontinental European public and private collections during the Renaissance, Enlightenment and modern eras. They study the impact of class, geographical location and specific cultural contexts on the gathering and use of printed and handwritten texts and other printed artefacts. The volume explores the social dimension of book collecting, and considers how practices of collecting developed during these periods of profound cultural, social and political change.

This volume explores the world of book collecting in early modern Ireland and Britain. It investigates the ways in which texts, both manuscript and printed, were collected, and draws attention to the wider impact of the European book trade on changing reading habits and the availability of books. Early modern book collectors bought books for a variety of reasons. By combining case studies of institutional and private book collectors, the essays not only demonstrate how individual collections came into being, but also how private and public collections interacted with each other. These essays offer vital insights into the communal world of the early modern book trade.

The meat of this reference for amateur and professional book collectors is a list of thousands of books with suggested prices for the first editions, which can also be used to price later editions. Other sections suggest what books to collect, where to buy them, what to look for, and the fundamentals of building and maintaining a collection. Also useful for book dealers and librarians. Updated from previous editions, the frequency of which is not noted. No general index, but most of the sections are alphabetical. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
