The Literature of the Old Testament in Its Historical Development (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Literature of the Old Testament in Its Historical Development The plan of this volume needs a word of explanation. It was originally intended to publish translations of the most important texts of the Old Testament, grouped topically and edited in such a way as to show both their relation to each other and to that process of development into the work as a Whole by which they found their place in the collection. Considerable progress had been made along these lines when the war interrupted the preparation of the series. After it was over, publishing conditions still presented sufiieient difficulties to compel a modification in the original plan, since that would have involved reprinting large parts of the Old Testament which, with but slight textual yariants, would be already accessible to any reader. It was therefore decided to shorten the quoted text to such an extent that it could be readily printed in the midst of the editorial comment, instead of as a body of documents by itself. Where necessary, the larger sections are summarized, and their significance is thus brought out at the same time. The book is obviously not any longer self-sufiicing; it is a companion to the study of the Old Testament, rather than a repository of its texts. The Old Testament Student (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Old Testament Student Plainly a reconstruction must rest at first upon a critical restoration of the text both of the Bible itself and of outside sources. It requires also a most exact and historical inter pretation of these sources. Hence the cry of real scholarship in Germany is, Back to the sources! And this Quellen kritik is producing a large mass of technical literature. Hence it is that Prof. Dillmann lectures on d104 Geschichte des Alten Testaments and lays Special emphasis in his Seminar upon emendations Of the Hebrew text and its comparison with the Septuagint; that Prof: Harnack edits a series of d104en und Untersuchungen zur Geschichte der Alt Christlichen Literatur, and that in this series Prof. Weiss has just published a very careful and scholarly discussion of the text of the book of Revelation. Prof. Harnack too in his Seminar for Church History discusses only the origi nal patristic texts. The appearance however at recent dates of so many new introductory works to both the Old and New Testaments, as well as lecture courses on Introductions (which are more frequent here than in America) is an evidence that teachers and scholars are endeavoring to bring into more general notice this effort to construct a new background for the biblical literature. The same reason brings Prof Pflei derer to combine in his lectures the two subjects of New Testament Introduction and New Testament Theology in order to bring the literary development of the New Testa ment literature more forcibly into connection with the progress of Christian doctrine. Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament However willingly I might have undertaken the labour of giving an entirely new form to this new edition of the Introduction to the Old Testament, ' my contemporaries have hitherto afforded me small occasion to exchange the results of my former researches against other convictions. I am obliged, therefore, to confine myself merely to remedy the defects of the former editions to the best of my judg ment and power, and bring the present one up to the level of the existing state of Biblical Literature. The proposed alterations, then, affect less the entire work. Than its details, and I h0pe to have omitted nothing essential from new works which may have appeared, either to its increase or improvement. May the public be only as well pleased with the present as with past editions! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Old Testament Life and Literature (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Old Testament Life and Literature So far as space has permitted, all those contacts, national and international, that influenced the He brews, have been presented as the background of the literature. It was in the midst of national travail, with its frequent tragedy and occasional triumph, that the great Old Testament leaders ever ministered, directly to their fellow men, in the realm of morals and religion. The Wisdom-Literature of the Old Testament (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Wisdom-Literature of the Old Testament The present volume completes the short Introduction to the Poetical Books of the Bible begun in The Praises of Israel, published last year. The phraseology of the title is not perfectly accurate, for Ecclesiastes is not poetical, and the Song of Songs does not properly belong to Wisdom-Literature. But the books of the Bible treated of in these two small volumes belong to the same group of Scriptures, and are conveniently studied together. If these brief Manuals prove to be of service to readers who have not time or opportunity to use larger and more valuable works, the labour of preparing them will be fully repaid.
