The Logic of Madness

Book Description

In assuming that mental illness is a mathematical problem, The Logic of Madness analyses how a human action can be deviant even when rational. It reveals that a person without a genetic or brain abnormality can have an apparent mental disorder that is entirely logical in its structure.

Defining Mental Disorder

Book Description

Philosophers discuss Jerome Wakefield's influential view of mental disorder as "harmful dysfunction," with detailed responses from Wakefield himself. One of the most pressing theoretical problems of psychiatry is the definition of mental disorder. Jerome Wakefield's proposal that mental disorder is "harmful dysfunction" has been both influential and widely debated; philosophers have been notably skeptical about it. This volume provides the first book-length collection of responses by philosophers to Wakefield's harmful dysfunction analysis (HDA), offering a survey of philosophical critiques as well as extensive and detailed replies by Wakefield himself.

The Greening of Pharmaceutical Engineering, Applications for Physical Disorder Treatments

Book Description

The Greening of Pharmaceutical Engineering This fourth volume in a groundbreaking new four-volume set offers new philosophies and ideas for diagnosing and treating physical disorders, with a view toward bringing the pharmaceutical industry closer to chemical, environmental, and economic sustainability. This fourth and final volume in a four-volume series on the greening of pharmaceutical engineering presents evidence for the applications of new theories advanced in the first two volumes. Similar to the Volume three, which was for mental health, this volume presents applications for the diagnosis and treatment of physical disorders. Based on the groundwork laid in the first two volumes, the authors now embark on significant, real-life scenarios that apply their theory to physical disorder treatments. In keeping with the tradition of engineering solutions, practical yet sustainable solutions are presented. The fundamental flaws of the conventional approach to medicine is well known. However, this book does not stop at unearthing criticism of western medicine. It offers hope and recommends a series of solutions for both prevention and treatment of physical ailments. Both evidence in studies and the theory behind various treatments are analyzed. Furthermore, food and energy sources are discussed in general as they both directly impact human health. Physical and emotional activities are the other tangible and intangible factors that play a role in human health are discussed. All major diseases, scientific diagnoses, and their common treatments are presented and analyzed. Recommendations for lifestyle changes that could prevent and reverse syndromes are discussed with comprehensive analysis and evidence in medicinal studies. Seasonal flus as well as Covid-19 and other recent viruses with deadly consequences are discussed and ways to manage them through diet, exercises, and meditation are presented. Treatment plans, along with food recipes for specific ailments are presented with discussion of the logic behind these remedies. Valuable as a learning tool for beginners in this area as well as a daily reference for engineers and scientists working in these areas, this is a must-have for any library.

Cognitive Vulnerability to Emotional Disorders

The different chapters of this book present detailed information on the general concept of addiction as applied to gambling, the clinical characteristics, epidemiology and comorbidities of gambling disorder, as well as typical cognitive distortions found in patients with gambling disorder. In addition, the book includes chapters discussing animal models and the genetic and neurobiological underpinnings of the disorder. Further, it is examining treatment options including pharmacological and psychological intervention methods, as well as innovative new treatment approaches. The book also discusses relevant similarities to and differences with substance-related disorders and other behavioral addictions. Lastly, it examines gambling behavior from a cultural perspective, considers possible prevention strategies and outlines future perspectives in the field.

The Order-Disorder Paradox

Book Description

Increasing order in a system also creates disorder: this seemingly paradoxical idea has deep roots in early cultures throughout the world, but it has been largely lost in our modern lives as we push for increasing systematization in our world and in our personal lives. Drawing on nearly five decades of research as well as forty-five years working as a psychoanalyst, Nathan Schwartz-Salant explains that, in a world where vast amounts of order are being created through the growing success of science and technology, the concomitant disorder is having devastating effects upon relationships, society, and the environment. As a Jungian analyst with training in the physical sciences, Schwartz-Salant is uniquely qualified to explore scientific conceptions of energy, information, and entropy alongside their mythical antecedents. He analyzes the possible effects of created disorder, including its negative consequences for the creator of the preceding order as well as its potentially transformative functions. With many examples of the interaction of order and disorder in everyday life and psychotherapy, The Order-Disorder Paradox makes new inroads into our understanding of the wide-ranging consequences of the order we create and its effects on others and the environment.

Theory-Based Data Analysis for the Social Sciences

Book Description

This book presents the elaboration model for the multivariate analysis of observational quantitative data. This model entails the systematic introduction of "third variables" to the analysis of a focal relationship between one independent and one dependent variable to ascertain whether an inference of causality is justified. Two complementary strategies are used: an exclusionary strategy that rules out alternative explanations such as spuriousness and redundancy with competing theories, and an inclusive strategy that connects the focal relationship to a network of other relationships, including the hypothesized causal mechanisms linking the focal independent variable to the focal dependent variable. The primary emphasis is on the translation of theory into a logical analytic strategy and the interpretation of results. The elaboration model is applied with case studies drawn from newly published research that serve as prototypes for aligning theory and the data analytic plan used to test it; these studies are drawn from a wide range of substantive topics in the social sciences, such as emotion management in the workplace, subjective age identification during the transition to adulthood, and the relationship between religious and paranormal beliefs. The second application of the elaboration model is in the form of original data analysis presented in two Analysis Journals that are integrated throughout the text and implement the full elaboration model. Using real data, not contrived examples, the text provides a step-by-step guide through the process of integrating theory with data analysis in order to arrive at meaningful answers to research questions.
