He met Toe Isapela Leituala, a Samoan girl. She introduced him to The Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter-day Saints. In 1973 he was baptized into the LDS Church and in 1974 they were married. After leaving the military in 1975, they settled in Salt Lake City where he became the first African-American man to be given the priesthood after the revelation received by President Spencer W.
