The Missionary Enterprise

Book Description

Excerpt from The Missionary Enterprise: A Concise History of Its Objects, Methods and Extension A Decade ago the "Concise History of Missions" was written for the purpose of giving in compact form, available for students and those who have not leisure or opportunity for more extended study, a general survey of the progress of foreign missions. With occasion for a new edition, there came up the question of revision. At first it seemed an easy matter. Certain chapters might have to be rewritten, and some additions made, but the greater part would remain essentially the same. Examination, however, showed that this was not true. History is not mere chronicle. Dates remain the same, but with more complete knowledge, and better perspective, the significance of the facts identified with the dates, often changes so completely that the older statement becomes practically incorrect. Especially has this been true of foreign missions. The labours of mission specialists at home, as Drs. Warneck, Geo. Smith, Jas. S. Dennis, Lemuel C.Barnes and others; the contributions of missionaries on the field, as John G.Paton, Arthur H.Smith, Bishop Thoburn, J.P. Jones, H.G. Underwood, and their associates; the marvellous increase in general missionary literature, especially the text-books issued by the various movements; all have combined to increase vastly the amount of information. The Empire of Christ

Book Description

Excerpt from The Empire of Christ: Being a Study of the Missionary Enterprise in the Light of Modern Religious Thought This book is an attempt to re-state, in terms which are in harmony with our altered theological thought and our changed social outlook, the old but abiding responsibility of the Church for the salvation of the world. It is an endeavour to make distinct and definite that vision of empire which was in the mind of the Church's greatest seer, when he gave expression to the first century's anticipation of the final century's realisation, and formulated for her the phoenix song of her ultimate triumph The kingdoms of this world have become the empire of our God and of His Christ. The picture which is here presented has, been painted under a Western sky, with the shifting clouds and expanding stretches of blue, whichare characteristic of our present theological thought. The landscape, however, is Eastern, taken from the India of the author's acquaintance, and requires, therefore, to be looked at with a due regard to relativity. Feeling the attraction \of the. The Missionary Enterprise

Book Description

"The spirit of Missions is the spirit of Comcord. The key-note was struck on the plains of Bethlehem; and all who have sympathy with the angelic announcement, are sure to think, feel, utter and act in concert, both with the heavenly host, and with one another." -from the Preface Here we have 15 powerful discourses from the leading evangelical ministers of the mid-nineteenth century on the vital subject of Missions. Men like Samuel Miller, Francis Wayland, Edward Dorr Griffin, William R. Williams, Richard Fuller, Lyman Beecher and many more speak with one voice on the importance of taking the Gospel to the ends of the earth unto the end of the age.
