An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform

Book Description

This is a catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of rare books dealing with 'popular medicine' in early America which is housed at the University of Rochester Medical School library. The books described in the catalogue were written by physicians and other professionals to provide information for the non-medical audience. The books taught human anatomy, hygiene, temperance and diet, how to maintain health, and how to cope with illness especially when no professional help was available. The books promoted a healthy lifestyle for the readers, giving guidance on everything from physical fitness and recreation to the special health needs of women. The collection consists of works dealing with reproduction (from birth control to delivering and caring for a baby), venereal disease, home-nursing, epidemics, and the need for public sex education.

The Best Family Physician and Household Companion

Book Description

Excerpt from The Best Family Physician and Household Companion: The Mystery of Medicine Explained! Prepared for the Use of Families, Farmers, Mechanics, Travelers, Everybody All the works that I have previously met with, on this sun joet, have invariably attempted too much, by giving directions for treatment that the great mass of their readers would be unwilling to try. I have endeavored to give simple, brief, and safe instructions, so no one need be afraid to follow them. I have, of course, availed myself of all the sources of informa tion possible in the preparation of the work. The study of our own natures is, perhaps, the most elevating and ennobling subject which can engage the mind, and we ought to deem it as much a part of our sacred duty to promote physical health and happiness in this life, as to prepare our spirits for the fruition of a happy immortality. Knowing the weight of responsibility resting upon me in issuing a volume like this, for the guidance, comfort, and benefit of my fellow-beings, I feel to implore the blessings of God, that my labors be not in vain.
