Navigating Fake News, Alternative Facts, and Misinformation in a Post-Truth World

Book Description

In the current day and age, objective facts have less influence on opinions and decisions than personal emotions and beliefs. Many individuals rely on their social networks to gather information thanks to social media’s ability to share information rapidly and over a much greater geographic range. However, this creates an overall false balance as people tend to seek out information that is compatible with their existing views and values. They deliberately seek out “facts” and data that specifically support their conclusions and classify any information that contradicts their beliefs as “false news.” Navigating Fake News, Alternative Facts, and Misinformation in a Post-Truth World is a collection of innovative research on human and automated methods to deter the spread of misinformation online, such as legal or policy changes, information literacy workshops, and algorithms that can detect fake news dissemination patterns in social media. While highlighting topics including source credibility, share culture, and media literacy, this book is ideally designed for social media managers, technology and software developers, IT specialists, educators, columnists, writers, editors, journalists, broadcasters, newscasters, researchers, policymakers, and students.

Project 365

Book Description

Early in 2013, I set out to give 365 pieces of original art to anyone, anywhere in the world for free. But this project evolved into so much more than making art more accessible. I realized halfway through that I was doing a project about happiness. It made me under- stand even more how much joy and pleasure art brings to people's lives. For me, having a piece of original art was always about the inspiration and connection to the artist. However, the stories I've read from all of you have given the art so much more meaning for me and also made me better understand what I was doing. Regardless of from where in the world you followed the project, the true universal language we all share is one through art. That realization is truly the thing that helped motivate me to sacrifice countless nights and weekends to get through this project. I've grown and learned so much this year. My art has matured and I've met some great people and developed new friends on and off of Facebook. I loved discovering more about each person that received the daily work-- where they're from and what the piece meant to them. The project has always been about giving back. That's why I'm excited about supporting the Children's Creativity Museum in San Francisco by donating the proceeds from this book to them, to help contribute in some way to the next generation.
