Longitude 149° W in the northern foothills of the Alaska Range, which form a belt about 20 miles wide between the high mountains and the lowlands of the Tanana Valley. This foothill area is rugged and includes a series of nearly parallel ridges and intervening areas of less relief Most of the coal areas are in lowland tracts that lie between the foothill ridges and are drained by eastward or westward flowing tributaries of the major streams, which head in the high mountains and flow northward across the foothill belt.
