The New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ In the notation ofvarious Reading from the versions here embraced, isfi'a Enema, regard has in the main been had only to essential differences, i. E. To difl'erences in sense: to have extended it to particles and phrases, except when these had a bearing on the whole texture of the verse, would have been tedious to the collator, unasked for by readers, and encumber ing to the work. The above rule was not indeed rigorously observed. Even verbal changes deserve a place, when curi osity might be amused by the recovery of some fast-fading word, or the ceaseless current of the language illustrated by another in a novel sense. Especially was it the wish, that the relative sources of the Version in common use might be obvious to all; and words and clauses, not of much moment perhaps but as found in this, have been pointed out, when they might be traced to either of the earlier works, in particular. Of the class of variou readings, there is a considerable number, which recur so otten, that, to avoid their needless repetition, it was thought best, to give them once for all in a Tabular List with the answering expressions of Tyndale. This list will be found among the last of the preliminary pages, and the examples in question will not, except in a few instances of ac cidental insertion, be met with in the margin. The Jesus Sayings

Book Description

Is it possible to reconcile Jesus, the Prince of Peace, with religious violence? From the Inquisition to the burning of women healers to modern pedophilia scandals, spiritual leaders and followers are deeply divided about how to reconcile the teachings of Jesus with the atrocities of church history. How did his message get misinterpreted, and what relevance does that message have in the 21st century? Here, critically acclaimed author and social historian Rex Weyler explores the mystery surrounding the historical Jesus, whose voice and words have been distorted by centuries of revision. By examining the research of international Bible scholars and some 200 ancient sources, including the recently discovered Gospels of Thomas and Mary, Weyler recreates the life of Jesus and his legacy, from the Roman Empire to the present day. Combining popular history with modern scholarship, The Jesus Sayings is a revelatory and highly readable work that entertains, inspires, and enlightens.

The Words of the Lord Jesus, Vol. 7 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Words of the Lord Jesus, Vol. 7 IT has been found necessary, on account of its disproportion ate bulk, to divide the last volume of the first edition of this work. The question may be asked, why I have not rather retrenched and curtailed it; and my reply is, that I did not think myself justified in dealing thus with a book which already belongs to the public, and has been blessed to the public good: -that the words of the Passion and the Resurrection demand the most careful and elaborate treatment, being of all our Lord's discourses the most weighty, the most profound, and the most unlimited in their consequences; - and, moreover, that they involve more than ordinary exposition of the historical narrative with which they are so wonderfully interwoven. As to the most diffuse of the treatises contained in these volumes - those on Baptism and the Lord's Supper - the necess1ty of our own times has required that they should be rather enlarged than compressed. May the Lord Open for this exposition of His word, based upon a penetrating contemplation of His life, a still more ex tended path Of usefulness and blessing! May it especially be the means of convincing many that the abstract principle of an authoritative Scripture, even without the strict obligations of Confessions, can Offer something positive enough for' a genuine faith in Christ; and of proving to others that even. A more rigorous idea of inspiration may be consistently and intelligently carried out into the details of interpretation, to the satisfaction of every reasonable mind. The Sayings of Jesus of Nazareth (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Sayings of Jesus of Nazareth Book on the Sayings of Jesus is no new thing. The great words are the world's most precious possession. However often we traverse them, there is always a wide hinterland of unexplored meaning, where the seekers in the land of thought never tire of wandering. Men have often desired to have them, free from their environment in the Gospels, so that they might be allowed to make their own unimpeded impression. And the desire has frequently been gratified in print. A new attempt must therefore not go out into the world of books without making some effort to justify its own special existence. The earliest compilation of Sayings of Jesus is that now known as the Logia. It comes in all probability from the hand of the disciple Matthew. It is not this journal of Matthew's which is the subject of the present book but all the extant words which fell from the Master's lips, as they are recorded in the New Testament, and in the extra-canonical writings, so far as they can be judged to be genuine words of the Lord.
