Fenton's manuscripts are in the British llluseum, and show very few alterations. Broome's are not known to be extant, but i'ope complained that they cost him much trouble. All the notes are said to have been furnished by Broome. What revision Pope gave them is unknown. The Odyssey of i'opc has deservedly taken the same rank in English literature as his lliad. The grander passages are rendered with the same animation and energy as those of its predecessor; and the entire version is in general more faithful to the sense. Cowper and Sotheby, both of whom were better qualified to represent the calm Odyssey than the more fiery lliad, may be preferred in parts, but the work of Pope and his auxiliaries as a whole, stands pro-eminent.
