Cable Vibrations in Cable-stayed Bridges

Book Description

The present book provides a comprehensive survey on the governing phenomena of cable vibration, both associated with direct action of wind and rain: buffeting, vortex-shedding, wake effects, rain-wind vibration; and resulting from the indirect excitation through anchorage oscillation: external and parametric excitation. Methodologies for assessment of the effects of those phenomena are presented and illustrated by practical examples. Control of cable vibrations is then discussed and state-of-art results on the design of passive control devices are presented.

Cable Supported Bridges

Book Description

Fourteen years on from its last edition, Cable Supported Bridges: Concept and Design, Third Edition, has been significantly updated with new material and brand new imagery throughout. Since the appearance of the second edition, the focus on the dynamic response of cable supported bridges has increased, and this development is recognised with two new chapters, covering bridge aerodynamics and other dynamic topics such as pedestrian-induced vibrations and bridge monitoring. This book concentrates on the synthesis of cable supported bridges, suspension as well as cable stayed, covering both design and construction aspects. The emphasis is on the conceptual design phase where the main features of the bridge will be determined. Based on comparative analyses with relatively simple mathematical expressions, the different structural forms are quantified and preliminary optimization demonstrated. This provides a first estimate on dimensions of the main load carrying elements to give in an initial input for mathematical computer models used in the detailed design phase. Key features: Describes evolution and trends within the design and construction of cable supported bridges Describes the response of structures to dynamic actions that have attracted growing attention in recent years Highlights features of the different structural components and their interaction in the entire structural system Presents simple mathematical expressions to give a first estimate on dimensions of the load carrying elements to be used in an initial computer input This comprehensive coverage of the design and construction of cable supported bridges provides an invaluable, tried and tested resource for academics and engineers.

Developments in fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for civil engineering

Book Description

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) has been a practical alternative construction material for replacing steel in the construction industry for several decades. However, some mechanical weaknesses of FRP are still unresolved, which limit the extensive use of this material in civil infrastructure. In order to mitigate the disadvantage of using FRP, the concept of hybridization is delivered here. The advantages of hybrid structural systems include the cost effectiveness and the ability to optimize the cross section based on material properties of each constituent material. In this chapter, two major applications of hybrid FRP composites are discussed: (1) the internal reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, and (2) the cables in long-span cable-stayed bridges. In order to improve the flexural ductility of FRP-reinforced concrete (FRPRC) beam, the additional steel longitudinal reinforcement is proposed such that the hybrid FRPRC beams contain both FRP and steel reinforcement. In order to improve the vibrational problem in pure FRP cables used in bridge construction, an innovative hybrid FRP cable which can inherently incorporate a smart damper is proposed. The objective of this chapter is to deliver an up-to-date review of hybrid FRP composite structures, including both the industrial practice and the research in academia. The advantages of using hybrid FRP composites for construction will also be described with experimental support. It is hoped that the reader will appreciate the concept of hybridization, which leads to the efficient utilization of all constituent materials in a bonded system.

Advanced Composites in Bridge Construction and Repair

Book Description

Advanced composite materials for bridge structures are recognized as a promising alternative to conventional construction materials such as steel. After an introductory overview and an assessment of the characteristics of bonds between composites and quasi-brittle structures, Advanced Composites in Bridge Construction and Repair reviews the use of advanced composites in the design and construction of bridges, including damage identification and the use of large rupture strain fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. The second part of the book presents key applications of FRP composites in bridge construction and repair, including the use of all-composite superstructures for accelerated bridge construction, engineered cementitious composites for bridge decks, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites for cable-stayed bridges and for repair of deteriorated bridge substructures, and finally the use of FRP composites in the sustainable replacement of ageing bridge superstructures. Advanced Composites in Bridge Construction and Repair is a technical guide for engineering professionals requiring an understanding of the use of composite materials in bridge construction. - Reviews key applications of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in bridge construction and repair - Summarizes key recent research in the suitability of advanced composite materials for bridge structures as an alternative to conventional construction materials

Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Cables for Orthogonally Loaded Cable Structures. Advantages and Feasibility

Book Description

With the advantages of high strength, lightweight, no corrosion and excellent fatigue resistance, Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) cables have the potential to replace steel cables in a broad range of applications. The ideal structures for such cables are highly pre-tensioned cable systems that are loaded orthogonally to their cable axes. This type of structures with CFRP cables, such as cable net facades, spoked wheel cable roofs and stressed-ribbon bridges, can be built economically with large or small spans. This book is the first in the world to demonstrate the advantages of using CFRP cables in orthogonally loaded cable structures, including detailed analyses of mechanical properties and economic efficiencies. Furthermore, in order to solve the anchorage problem which hinders the application of CFRP cables, two new CFRP cable anchorages, especially suitable for orthogonally loaded cable structures, are proposed in this book. In addition, a prototype of CFRP spoked wheel cable roof built by the author is presented to show the feasibility of CFRP orthogonally loaded cable structures based on the present technology; a novel design, i.e. the CFRP Continuous Band Winding System, is also conceptually introduced, so as to show a feasible form of CFRP orthogonally loaded cable structures in the future. This book is written to encourage the use of CFRP cables and show that CFRP cable structures are feasible and have advantages over steel cable structures. It will be read by researchers of structural engineering and by consulting engineers.
