Book Description

On The Tube bound for the Rialto Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, Jesse Millette is in a world of his own as he contemplates his life and what he wishes to become. But before he knows it, he's chasing through one of London's busiest Tube stations, with his friends Ellena and Zara at his heels, in pursuit of a thief who has stolen his wallet. If Jesse believed that such thievery would be the end of the thrilling events of that evening, he was sorely mistaken. This night will change Jesse’s life forever and you will join him as he becomes embroiled in a murder mystery of drama, deception and danger. By following clues and questioning suspects, Jesse must figure out why someone would murder an actress in the prime of her career. He explores the old Rialto Theatre with Ellena and Zara and uncovers secrets hidden deep within its crumbling walls. The teenage detective must race against the clock to unmask the phantom before tragedy strikes again.

Phantoms

Book Description

“Phantoms is gruesome and unrelenting…It’s well realized, intelligent, and humane.”—Stephen King They found the town silent, apparently abandoned. Then they found the first body, strangely swollen and still warm. One hundred fifty were dead, 350 missing. But the terror had only begun in the tiny mountain town of Snowfield, California. At first they thought it was the work of a maniac. Or terrorists. Or toxic contamination. Or a bizarre new disease. But then they found the truth. And they saw it in the flesh. And it was worse than anything any of them had ever imagined...

Phantoms of the Other

Book Description

During the 1980s Jacques Derrida wrote and published three incisive essays under the title Geschlecht, a German word for "generation" and "sexuality." These essays focused on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, taking up the rarely discussed issue of sexual difference in Heidegger's thought. A fourth essay—actually the third in the series—was never completed and never published. In Phantoms of the Other, David Farrell Krell reconstructs this third Geschlecht on the basis of archival materials and puts it in the context of the entire series. Touching on the themes of sexual difference, poetics, politics, and criticism as practiced by Heidegger, Derrida's unfinished third essay offers a penetrating critical analysis of Heidegger's views on sexuality and Heidegger's reading of the love poems of Georg Trakl, one of the greatest Expressionist poets of the German language, who died during the opening days of the First World War.

Feasts of Phantoms

Book Description

How is a well meaning mother to protect her daughter from a culture where the birth of a baby girl is met with despair because the only future open to her is that of sexual assault and teenage pregnancy, which would doom her to a life of illiteracy and poverty as it has doomed her lineage before her? Genital mutilation has many causes but at the root of all of them is fear. A fear that pushes a mother to do the unthinkable to a daughter that she loves? What does a scapegoat do with the fate she has been handed? Accept it and roll with it, or reject it? How is she to reject it when the acceptance of her role is needed for her culture's psychic equilibrium? In the theater of the mind where all springs forth, is there such a thing as an innocent victim, and a victimizer? Feasts of Phantoms is a novel that explores of all of these questions.

Paracletes and Phantoms

Book Description

In this nouvelle, Detective Benjamin Sterling, gets involved in a crime investigation at the mysterious Willowbrook Manor. On getting a call from the widow of the mansion, Evelyn DuPont, whose husband Victor DuPont, was found murdered in his study, the investigation begins. The exploration leads the detective into a maze of crime and deceit that is hued with elements of ‘occult’ and forbidden family ‘curses’, a " forgotten chamber beneath the hearth, where the past and future lie intertwined”, as the author describes. The description of the ‘Shadows and the amulets’, the long dark tunnels and a looming spirit guide’, ‘the clandestine organization known as the "Keepers of the Veil,", and ‘the guardians and the keepers’ are entertaining and enjoyable for young readers. In the battle that ensues between the good and the evil forces of nature, the author keeps our hopes alive by allowing the ‘good’ to prevail over the malefic. I recommend this short story to young readers who would love to venture into a fantasy world of gothic structures and ancient history cloaked in cryptic supernatural mystery. A commendable piece of fantasy by a teenager, I would say.
