JAMES FENIMORE COOPER (1789-1851) was born in New Jersey, spent his youth partly on the family estate at Cooperstown on Otsego Lake (NY), partly in the merchant marine (after dismissal for Yale), partly in the American navy. He then settled down as a country proprietor and writer of novels. His second book "The Spy" (1821), a tale of the American Revolution, brought him into prominence. "The Pioneers" (1823) was the first of his best-known group of novels, "Leather-Stocking Tales", called after the deerskin leggings of their hero, pioneer scout Natty Bumppo, alias Deerslayer, Pathfinder or Hawkeye. The sequels were "The last of the Mohicans" (1826), "The Prairie" (1827), "The Pathfinder" (1840) and "The Deerslayer"(1841). They deal with adventures of the frontier and give a vivid picture of American Indian and pioneer life.

The household of Mr Wharton and his daughters is visited by Mr Harper, an American loyalist; Captain Henry Wharton, the son of the house; and Mr Harvey Birch, suspected of being a British spy. The futures of these characters become inextricably linked as they face the perils of the War of Independence, and the sufferings of the human heart.

Inspired by accusations of venality leveled at the men who captured Major Andre (Benedict Arnold's co-conspirator, executed for espionage in 1780), Cooper's novel centers on Harry Birch, a common man wrongly suspected by well-born Patriots of being a spy for the British. Even George Washington, who supports Birch, misreads the man, and when Washington offers him payment for information vital to the Patriot's cause, Birch scorns the money and asserts that his action were motivated not by financial reward, but by his devotion to the fight for independence. A historical adventure tale reminiscent of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels, The Spy is also a parable of the American experience, a reminder that the nation's survival, like its Revolution, depends on judging people by their actions, not their class or reputations.
