The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 8 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 8 Scott's lyre rings but in a mimic tone, like the mocking-bird, as he says, -in a mimicry of himself as he supposes that a friend might have mimicked him. A composition so far from serious need not be very seriously treated. The Cumbrian scenes, as Lockhart observes, were familiar to Scott in the days when he met and wooed Miss Charpentier at Gilsland. Among supposed authors of the poem was Mr. R. P. Gillies, a rather futile hanger - on of letters, whose Recollections of Sir Walter Scott (published before Lockhart's Life) are still worth reading. Taking, or pretending to take, Gillies for the author, Scott's friend, Lady Louisa Stuart, censured the Introduction to the Second Canto. Probably she disliked the point. The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart, Vol. 1 The popularity of The Mimtrelsy of the Scottish Border - of which the first edition appeared about a century ago, and the finally corrected edition, with additional notes by Lockhart, some thirty years later - was almost as immediate and general as that of its great precursor, Bishop Percy's Reliques ofancient Poetry, first published in 1765. Its influence in stimulating the industry of ballad collectors was also remarkable, though it can hardly be maintained that in this respect it surpassed the Reliques, if it be borne in mind that but for the Reliques, Scott might never have prepared the illinatrelay.
